n Children settle very well in the childminder's warm and homely setting. They form close bonds with the childminder and her assistant. Their excellent behaviour shows they feel relaxed and comfortable in their care. n The childminder and her assistant care for the children extremely well. Children are growing in confidence as the childminder supports them to develop their social skills in readiness for school. Children explore the setting with enthusiasm and demonstrate that they feel safe and secure. n Babies, toddlers and older children make good progress in all areas of learning. The childminder works closely with children's parents to agree their starting points and assess the next steps in their development. The childminder discusses children's progress with other settings they attend, to aid continuity in their learning. n The childminder places a strong focus on children's communication and language

development. All children develop good speaking and listening skills, including those who speak English as an additional language. The childminder asks parents to provide key words and phrases from their home language. This enables her to communicate with children and build on their knowledge of English successfully. n The qualified childminder supervises her assistant effectively. They observe each other's practice and offer constructive feedback. They seek the views of parents and children on the service they provide. This helps them to reflect on their provision and make continuous improvements to the setting. n The childminder has not established a sharply focused programme of professional development for herself and her assistant to help them to continually improve the quality of the provision.

n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder and her assistant and spoke to children. n The inspector took account of the views of parents by reading their written comments and testimonials. n The inspector looked at relevant documentation, including children's records, policies, procedures and evidence of suitability and qualifications.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder builds good partnerships with parents and involves them in their children's learning. She keeps records of children's development and exchanges the progress check for children aged between two and three years with other professionals involved in their care and learning. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of safeguarding procedures. They are familiar with the contact details of their local authority safeguarding team. They keep useful information cards available at all times for them to refer to instantly should a concern arise. The childminder ensures that training in safeguarding and related matters is kept up to date. Many parents have written testimonials in support of the childminder and her assistant. They are extremely complimentary in their comments and say how much they value the care they give to their children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children show all of the characteristics of effective learning. The childminder ensures that all children have access to a good range of challenging activities to help them achieve their expected milestones. Children are curious, active and enthusiastic learners. The childminder and her assistant ask children questions in a way that stimulates their interest and helps them to recall past events. For example, children describe what they see on the journey to school, such as a family of peacocks. They talk about the colours and how they know the difference between the male and the female. Children learn to count and recognise colours from an early age. Older children understand how to tell the time. The childminder and her assistant skilfully extend children's learning. For instance, they teach mathematical language such as 'higher', 'lower', 'bigger', 'smaller', 'over' and 'under' as children of different ages chase after soap bubbles.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder and her assistant are extremely affectionate towards the children in their care. They set firm boundaries and routines for children that help them to feel secure. The childminder and her assistant are excellent role models for children. They interact with them exceedingly well. Children thoroughly enjoy finding out about nature. They learn about the animals they see locally, both domestic and wild. Children plant vegetables and herbs in the garden. They pick and taste the herbs and examine them as they grow. This helps children to develop an excellent idea of what is healthy for them to eat. Children learn about safety when using tools to prepare their own food. They have excellent manners and demonstrate respect for others.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are independent and well prepared for school. The youngest children know how to put on their shoes and manage their self-care needs. They are creative. They draw pictures on stones in the flower beds and arrange shells to form shapes. Children are physically active and learn how to keep themselves safe at parks and near roads. They discover differences in other people. They explore different cultures and traditions through resources, activities and books in the setting and when out in their local community.
