p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder does not have a secure understanding of all the requirements of her registration. This has led to her being in breach of the safeguarding, and learning and development, requirements. Currently she cares for more children under five years than her ratios allow. However, one child is about to leave her provision so there is minimal impact. The childminder completes risk assessment to help her to maintain a safe and secure environment. She ensures safety devices are in place so children can play in safety, and has devised an evacuation procedure. However, she does not practise this with children to enable them to become familiar with the process and to evaluate its effectiveness. The childminder has done some reflecting on her practice and, as a result of this, children now sleep in the lounge, in appropriate equipment, so she can see and hear them more easily. The childminder has recently completed a paediatric first-aid

course to keep her certificate valid and her knowledge of how to treat injuries up to date. Safeguarding is effective.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder understands how to support children's learning and development. She uses her knowledge of what children are likely to achieve for their age and stage of development to provide activities and experiences they enjoy. However, she is not aware of the requirement to complete a written summary of children's progress when they are aged between two and three, and to share this in writing with parents. This is a breach of the requirements and does not help her enable children to make as much progress as they possibly can. Nonetheless, the childminder plays alongside children and encourages them to find things out for themselves. For example, while children use spiky construction blocks she encourages them to try and repeat what shapes and colours objects are. She praises them for their babbling and develops 'conversations' with them.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder shares what she knows about children's progress and well-being with parents each day when they collect their children. Children settle quickly into the childminder's care and demonstrate they have built close bonds with her. They are eager to play, and the childminder provides them with plenty of reassurance and encouragement. The childminder provides consistent praise and, when children are upset or in need of extra attention, such as when they also want cuddles from her, she calmly provides this. Young children are developing their confidence and self-esteem well. The childminder provides regular opportunities for children to build on their social and physical skills, such as going to local parks and garden centres.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Overall, children gain the skills they need to prepare them for their next stage in learning. However, the lack of a progress check for children when aged two does not enable all next steps in children's development to be effectively identified and used to target their ongoing learning. Young children develop sound social skills and they learn to play cooperatively with other children. They learn how to communicate their needs and independently choose resources for themselves.
