p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Young people enjoy a good quality of care that enables them to make good progress. Staff work hard to ensure that young people live in a safe, caring and supportive environment. This coordinated approach helps young people to have improved outcomes, especially in their school attendance and in being able to have better self- control with regard to their emotions. Staff support young people to lead healthy lives. Staff work well with local health professionals to ensure that young people know how to access health appointments and obtain the treatment and health advice that they need, including emotional support. This close partnership working means that young people‟s health needs are well met.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Young people who have a history of poor school attendance now have an identified educational provision to attend. Staff are proactive in working with teachers to make sure that young people reach their educational potential.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Young people have clear plans in place to ensure that they retain positive links with family members and friends. Staff support these arrangements practically, as well as by providing emotional support for young people. These arrangements reflect any restrictions that may be in place to safeguard young people, and are clearly understood and followed by staff‟

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff have a good understanding of the young people in their care and their individual vulnerabilities. There is a clear procedure for reporting and managing safeguarding concerns and staff have a good understanding of this process and of their responsibilities.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff write a risk assessment for each young person and make sure that these assessments stay up to date. This ensures that, as a young person‟s circumstances change, staff remain alert to any new threats to their well-being.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff are prepared to work through difficult periods with young people. This support enables young people to reflect on incidents in a constructive and helpful way. Staff use the knowledge and skills of other professionals, such as the organisation‟s psychologist, to understand more about young people‟s challenging behaviours. Consequently, the staff‟s understanding of how to manage young people‟s challenging behaviour is good.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff follow individual missing-from-care protocols that help to identify a young person‟s vulnerabilities. Staff maintain good communication with all agencies so that incidents are ended as quickly as possible. When a young person returns from being missing from home, the staff make sure that the young person can speak to an an independent Inspection report children‟s home: 1270298 4 person. This helps staff to understand the reasons why a young person has chosen to go missing from the home, and to find new ways to minimise the chances of this happening again in the future.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Young people live in a physically safe environment. Regular health and safety checks on all electrical, gas and fire appliances help to make sure that they remain in good working order. Regular fire drills take place so that young people know what they need to do in the event of a fire.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The staff recruitment and selection process includes a full assessment of a person‟s suitability to work with children.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The home has an appropriately qualified registered manager in place. The manager has been in post since the home opened in May 2018, and holds a diploma in leadership, health and social care at level 5.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff receive good levels of supervision and support through regular one-to-one supervision, and team meetings. They receive good guidance and direction from the manager, and benefit from monthly clinical supervision meetings with the organisation‟s psychologist. Staff recognise that this helps them to have a better understanding of young people‟s behaviour and emotional needs. Consequently, staff take more responsibility for promoting good experiences and improved outcomes.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has conducted her regulation 45 reviews on the quality of the care provided by the home. However, these reports fail to capture young people‟s views. This limits the opportunities for young people to have their views on how the home is run taken into account.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Training records show that staff access a wide range of training courses which are centred on young people‟s specific needs and vulnerabilities. All staff have attained or are working towards level 3 diplomas in residential childcare. Consequently, staff keep their skills and knowledge up to date, and are competent in looking after young people.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Partnership working with other safeguarding agencies is effective.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has addressed the requirements and recommendations raised at the last inspection. As a result: there are always enough staff on each shift; when young people leave the home, this is now done in a planned way; the statement of purpose is now up to date; and all staff are now trained in the same method of restraint. Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children‟s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.

p.5
