This provision is good

n The childminder is very experienced and offers an inviting play and learning environment for children. She is well organised and has policies and procedures in place to underpin her good practice. n Children behave well and develop good social skills. The childminder takes them on regular visits to toddler groups, soft-play sessions and outings with other childminders, where they learn to mix with local children. n Children's language development is supported well. For example, the childminder uses clear, simple language that younger children can copy. She models and repeats language for children to hear, helping them to develop a wide range of vocabulary. n Children's interests are well supported. For example, the childminder provides a range of technological toys for children who show an interest in buttons and flaps that open and shut. They show delight when they manage to operate them. n Children are encouraged to develop a love of books. They enjoy looking at the pictures

and listening to their favourite stories, especially when the childminder makes noises of the animals in the pictures. n The childminder has developed very good relationships with parents. They particularly appreciate her flexible approach, which helps to provide continuity in care for their children. Parents say they feel reassured that their children are well looked after, and they would thoroughly recommend her to other families. n The childminder does not gather sufficient information from parents about children's stage of development to help her establish their starting points as accurately as possible at the earliest opportunity. n The childminder does not always make the most of ongoing training opportunities to further improve her knowledge and good practice.

n gather more initial information from parents about children's developmental stage to help establish, and more rapidly build on, what they already know and can do from the earliest opportunity n extend the use of further training opportunities to strengthen existing knowledge and teaching skills further.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector had a tour of the premises and viewed the areas used by the children. n The inspector observed the children interacting with the childminder. n The inspector discussed children's learning and development with the childminder. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. n The inspector took account of the views of parents through reading written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder knows the children very well and helps them to feel valued and welcome in her home. She regularly reflects on her practice. For example, she intends to develop her garden to build on the learning opportunities for children outside. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder can identify the possible indicators of abuse and knows the appropriate action to take if she has concerns about a child. She checks her home thoroughly to identify and remove any hazards. Partnerships with parents are very effective. The childminder ensures that they are kept well informed and involved in their children's care, learning and development. She has established very good links with the pre-schools and schools that children attend, to further support their learning and development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is enthusiastic and actively joins in children's play to enhance their learning. Young children eagerly explore their environment and demonstrate confidence in sharing their preferences. The childminder uses every opportunity to extend children's learning. For example, as they play with different sized rings, the childminder supports them to order the rings by size, developing their mathematical skills. She supports children's language development well. Younger children have many opportunities for practising their mark-making skills with paint, chalks and pencils. Older children enjoy taking part in a variety of creative activities. They demonstrate their creativity as they use a variety of art and craft materials. They are very proud of their pictures displayed in their learning journals.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder develops very good relationships with the children and their families. This promotes children's self-esteem and supports their sense of belonging. The childminder is very sensitive to children's needs. For example, she recognises when they are becoming tired or thirsty. Children develop their physical skills as they play in the garden and visit parks and soft-play centres. The childminder teaches children simple rules that help them to stay safe. For example, they learn that some plants along the roadside may sting them. The childminder reminds them to wear sun hats in the hot weather. Children gain a good understanding of where food comes from. For example, they grow, water and eventually pick the strawberries to eat at snack time. The childminder helps children to understand the importance of following good hygiene routines and eating a healthy diet.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress, and are working securely within the stage of development expected for their age. Young children are eager to investigate the good range of toys and resources available. They enjoy going to toddler groups, which helps them develop their social skills and meet other children from the community. Toddlers watch and learn from the older children and are keen to have a go and join in. They form close friendships and enjoy playing together. They are acquiring key skills and positive attitudes that will support them for their future learning and school.
