This provision is inadequate
n The childminder does not have a secure understanding of the requirements of the early years foundation stage. Aspects of her practice do not meet the requirements of the Childcare Register. n The childminder's understanding of safeguarding reporting procedures is weak. She lacks understanding of procedures to follow if there are safeguarding concerns about a child in her care or if an allegation has been made. This compromises children's safety and welfare. n The childminder does not maintain the environment well enough to promote children's health. She does not ensure that areas of her home and the equipment used by children are clean. n The childminder does not implement effective professional development practices to ensure that she meets all legal requirements, such as for data protection. n The childminder does not reflect appropriately on her practice to identify areas for development and improvement.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n The childminder supports children's language and communication development well. She gently introduces new vocabulary to children as they play and as they take part in daily routines. n The childminder plans interesting activities for children, following their interests, to support their good progress.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate
The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective. The childminder does not know the procedure to follow to make a safeguarding referral to the relevant authorities. For example, she is unclear about what to do in the event of an allegation made against her or if she has concerns about a child's welfare. This means she would not be able to take prompt action to keep children safe. The childminder can, however, recognise the signs and symptoms when a child is at risk of harm. She has completed some training to update her knowledge of the 'Prevent' duty so that she can identify the signs of extreme views or behaviours. The childminder does not evaluate her setting suitably. She does not provide a clean environment for children to play and take part in routines. For example, the floor where children play, and skirting boards and walls in the hallway, are visibly dirty. Children have access to dirty laundry in the bathroom and the doors, tiles

and floor in this room are not clean. This has an impact on children's safety and health. The childminder does not reflect on her own knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the early years foundation stage. For example, she does not fully understand her legal responsibilities for data protection. She does, however, understand how to keep children's information safe, such as photographs and records.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder knows the children in her care well. She carefully makes plans for how to support children in the next steps in their learning and shares her observations with parents. This helps children to continue their learning at home. For example, the childminder plans a range of activities for children to explore shapes and colours and gives up-to-date, precise information to parents. The childminder provides books that engage and interest children. Children enjoy pointing at and naming items and characters as they share books with the childminder. This helps to encourage their early interest in literacy.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate
The weaknesses in the childminder's understanding of safeguarding compromise children's safety. She does not provide a suitable environment to promote children's good health. Despite these weaknesses, children feel comfortable with the childminder and are relaxed as they learn and take part in activities. The childminder provides opportunities for children to run around and play on large equipment in the fresh air, such as in local parks. This helps children to develop physically as they learn new skills.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are beginning to learn about sharing and taking turns with good support from the childminder. They play alongside other children such as during visits to local groups to help develop their blossoming social skills. Children are beginning to show an interest in drawing and counting as they develop curiosity and interest in the available resources.
