p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff know the children well and are nurturing and responsive in meeting each child’s individual needs. By staff using consistent, positive interactions, children develop warm and trusting relationships. This positive relationship helps the children to feel listened to, cared for and highly valued. Staff support children to maintain healthy lifestyles. For example, staff encourage children to stop smoking and help them to understand the dangers of drinking alcohol. As a result, children’s physical well-being improves. Children participate in a range of activities that are aimed at providing them with opportunities to relax and to enjoy their leisure time, and at the same time promotes their independence and social skills. Staff prioritise children’s education. Consequently, children regularly attend school and Inspection report children’s home: SC476236 4 make good progress in their academic learning.

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff are aware of children’s vulnerabilities and are vigilant in their practice to help to keep children safe. Managers take swift action when concerns about staff practice arise. Consequently, children are protected from potential harm. Staff ensure that children receive high levels of supervision and support. As a result, there are very few incidents of children going missing from the home. Staff ensure that each child has an individual risk assessment that is a working document that staff regularly review and update. This enables the positive and dynamic management of children’s presenting risks to be safely managed. Staff receive training on how to safeguard children. This includes understanding children’s vulnerabilities to the risk of child sexual exploitation. Managers and staff ensure that the home is maintained to a high standard and that repairs are reported promptly. This commitment means that children continue to live in a

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager is child focused and is ambitious to improve the quality of care. Managers and staff are passionate about the children and work hard to ensure that each child experiences positive outcomes. Staff feel motivated and well supported by their managers and provide excellent care and protection to children in their care. The registered manager is increasingly using her own self-evaluation to assess the quality of care provided to children. This includes consulting children’s placing local authority, and engaging children and staff in making key decisions. Although managers follow safe recruitment procedures, occasionally managers miss out some of the necessary verification checks. For example, managers do not always ensure that references have been verified before a member of staff has started to work at the home. This gap has the potential to compromise the process needed to help managers

to be assured that a new member of staff is suitable to work with children. New members of staff receive a comprehensive induction into the home. Although staff receive supervision, the frequency of these meetings is not always in line with the organisation’s policy. As a result, some members of staff do not have regular supervision to enable them to reflect on their care practice. Managers ensure that staff receive mandatory training. However, sometimes there is a delay in staff receiving training that is specific to children’s individual needs and training that reflects changes in practice. This delay leaves some staff without additional knowledge in caring for children’s diverse needs and means that staff are not familiar with terms such as county lines. Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
