This provision is good

n The childminder provides a good mix of planned activities and child-initiated play opportunities. She observes children as they play and intervenes at appropriate times. For instance, as children look at books independently, the childminder asks if they would like to listen to a story. Children relish the opportunity and enjoy listening to a number of familiar stories, demonstrating engagement and interest throughout. n The childminder helps to prepare children for starting school. For example, she takes children on visits to nursery prior to them starting. The childminder also regularly uses their new teachers' names to provide children with familiarity. n The childminder plans, and makes regular changes to, her setting. She continues to have high expectations and has plans to raise the quality further. The childminder gathers the views of parents, such as through questionnaires. Parents provide positive

comments and state that they would recommend the childminder to other families. n Children behave well and display good social skills. They independently consider the needs of younger children, and they demonstrate kindness towards them. Children happily take turns, share toys and follow the rules well. n Parents are not consistently involved in the process of gathering information about children's prior knowledge as they start their placement. This means that it can sometimes take a while for the childminder to form initial assessments of children's learning. n The childminder does not offer children a wide range of experiences that help to extend their awareness about other people, cultures and communities beyond their own experiences.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n involve parents more in gathering information about what children know and can do when they first start to enable initial assessments to be completed from the outset n extend the opportunities available for children to help to build on their understanding of the wider world other than their immediate experience.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children during activities and free play. She assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated the teaching with the childminder. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector viewed a range of documents and checked evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises. n The inspector viewed written feedback provided by parents prior to the inspection and she took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder has a strong network of other local childminders. She accesses information online which is up to date and receives updates and training from her local authority. This enables her to maintain her good knowledge and helps her to explore new ideas and initiatives. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her role in protecting children from harm. She recognises any minor potential risks in her home and works with children to help to minimise them. For example, as children step out into the garden, the childminder reminds them to walk carefully on the wet surface, which they do. The childminder recognises the signs that children's safety or welfare may be at risk, and she knows what to do if she has concerns.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Once children have settled, the childminder observes children and assesses them on a regular basis. She has a good understanding about children's typical range of development. Therefore, the childminder knows how to focus her teaching on specific areas that require support. Children delight in exploring paints with a range of equipment, such as brushes, rollers and stamps. They talk about what they are creating, such as a butterfly, and enjoy making pictures to take home. Children explore the paints with their hands. They discuss how the paint feels and delight when they observe the results as the colours start to mix together. This enhances children's natural curiosity and the development of their finger muscles. The childminder makes very good use of stories to help to extend children's already good communication and language skills further. For example, she asks children questions, and children confidently predict what they think is

behind a flap. The childminder introduces new language to children, such as 'precious'. Children are interested to find out what the word means. This helps to extend children's vocabulary and helps to prepare them for early reading and writing.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The environment is well resourced and inviting for children. The childminder has created an outdoor playroom bursting with toys, games and items to support imaginary play. Children develop a secure sense of belonging. They are confident in the childminder's home. They talk to visitors and express their feelings and needs well. For instance, children make decisions about when to have a snack based on how hungry they feel. The childminder's garden has a wealth of equipment that supports children's physical development, such as slides and climbing apparatus. This helps to support the development of children's muscles and supports their healthy lifestyles.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development. They enjoy solving problems and working through these until they succeed. For example, they use a board with a range of fastenings and various locks and test out different ways to open and close them again. Children are eager to learn new skills and show a positive attitude to learning. Children are confident in their capabilities. For example, they enjoy demonstrating that they can count up to five frogs in a book.
