This provision is good

n The childminder evaluates her setting to promote continuous improvement. She reflects on planned and spontaneous activities to ensure that she can continually promote opportunities for children to make good progress. n The childminder promotes children's understanding of early literacy. She uses opportunities, such as during creative activities, to support their awareness of early reading, as they try and find hidden plastic letters and numbers in the sand. n The childminder recognises what children like to do and she provides good opportunities for them to be imaginative. During water and sand play the childminder added small coloured boats, to support children's recent interest in the water after a family trip to the seaside. n The childminder plans for children's learning effectively. She considers how children of different ages can be fully involved when taking part in planned activities together. She

monitors and makes accurate assessments of children's progress. n Children behave well. The childminder is a good role model. She encourages children to think about the feelings of other children and she teaches them right from wrong. n The childminder spends time asking young children relevant questions. However, on occasion, young children do not have enough time to think about how to respond to questions and comments. n Sometimes, the childminder stops children's play and leads them to another activity too quickly and this interrupts their enjoyment.

She looked at relevant documentation and reviewed evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. n The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder refreshes her safeguarding training regularly and has a good knowledge of child protection issues. She knows how to follow procedures if she has any concerns regarding a child's welfare. The childminder fosters a culture of continuous professional development. She follows a programme of training which includes attending childminder network meetings and carrying out her own independent research. This supports her in keeping up to date with legislative changes and enhances her teaching. The childminder works well with parents and other settings children attend, and shares information effectively to support children's continued development and progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder completes regular observations and identifies children's next steps in learning. She plans activities and experiences that are stimulating and enjoyable. Children develop a wide range of physical skills. For instance, toddlers use a range of scoops and tools as they manipulate the wet sand and create their own shapes using moulds and spades. The childminder extends children's language well. She introduced new words, such as 'spiky', as they talked about the different features of the hidden dinosaurs that children found in the soil.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children benefit from good opportunities to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. They have daily opportunities for fresh air and they eat a wide range of nutritious meals. Children develop a good awareness of their personal safety. For example, the childminder reminds young children during discussion of the importance of cutting their grapes into small pieces to avoid choking during snack time. The childminder provides a good range of experiences to promote children's learning. She takes them out into the local community and they discover the world around them. They learn about people and places. They socialise and develop an understanding of turn taking and sharing.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress. Children develop good skills to prepare them for future learning and in readiness for school. Young children learn to tidy away toys when they have finished activities and learn to understand the key times of the daily routine. Older children and toddlers develop many independence skills and show enthusiasm as they play and explore. Children are motivated and eager to learn.
