n The childminder monitors children's progress from the start. She plans a broad variety of activities in the home and local community to encourage children's development, relevant to their individual interests and developmental needs. Children make good progress in their learning and any gaps in learning are identified and addressed. n The childminder is gentle and attentive. Children settle quickly, indicating they feel safe and secure in her care as they explore the interesting resources. n The childminder reviews and reflects on her practice regularly. She seeks the views of those who use her service, uses her knowledge of the children in her care and undertakes training opportunities. This enables her to keep up to date with practice issues, develop her knowledge and continue to provide a good-quality service. n The childminder develops good working relationships with parents. She takes an interest in children's learning and experiences at home and shares her professional

knowledge. She shares information about children's activities and their developmental progress. n Children show some awareness of feelings but need more support with why it is important not to be over enthusiastic when physically cuddling others. n Generally, communication and language are encouraged well. However, sometimes the childminder does not provide sufficient commentary and model language clearly.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear knowledge of how to manage and minimise risks to children. She knows what action she must take to report concerns about a child's welfare. She supervises her assistant to ensure they understand their role and the safeguarding procedures they must follow. Parents comment favourably on the high-quality care and learning opportunities the childminder provides. The childminder is very committed to providing a good service and seeks parental views regularly to help develop her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how to monitor and encourage children's development and learning. She observes skilfully and plans appropriate activities carefully, building on children's interests. For example, the childminder notices that children need to develop their hand movements and prepares activities and resources to help. Children help to mix cornflour and water. They pour the water and stir the mixture with the spoon, developing their small physical skills. They explore the texture and allow the mixture to run through their fingers and then show wonder at how it forms a ball in their hands. The childminder provides instruction, asks questions to encourage the children to think and allows the children to explore independently. Carefully planned outings in the local community provide the children with many opportunities to develop their awareness of the world around them and things to talk about.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder offers effective settling-in visits when children first start. This provides an opportunity for parents and the childminder to observe and talk about the child and create a baseline from which progress can be monitored. The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of each child's routine and individuality, enabling her to meet their needs well. She is a calm and caring role model, providing regular praise and encouragement for children's efforts. She encourages an awareness of a healthy lifestyle. For instance, children learn about healthy eating as they grow items to eat in the garden. The childminder supports children's physical development well. For example, children visit local parks, where they enjoy opportunities to climb on different surfaces and safely run.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are inquisitive and curious about all that is around them and are developing good skills to help prepare them for future learning. For example, they listen attentively to a familiar story and talk about what they can see in the pictures. They know how to use books with care. Children's independence skills are developing well in relation to their age and understanding. They have good opportunities to develop their early mathematical awareness. For instance, they count the fruit in the story, and play games that help them to sort and match.
