This provision is inadequate
n The childminder does not ensure that all exit routes from the premises are completely clear in case of a fire or an emergency. n The childminder does not ensure that the garden is safe. She has not identified hazards such as nettles and garden waste. As a result, children cannot access outdoor play safely. n The childminder does not successfully support all parents to help them guide their children's learning at home. This means that opportunities to extend children's learning even further are missed.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n The childminder seeks the views of parents and children to help her evaluate the quality of her setting. Parents are complimentary about the childminder and praise the care and teaching their children receive. They value the relationship they have with the childminder and acknowledge the contribution this makes to their child's happiness when they attend. n The childminder has a wide range of toys and resources to support the learning and development of children. Children independently select and access resources. For example, in role play, children choose costumes to dress up as favourite characters from books. They use their imaginative skills well. n The childminder makes accurate assessments about what children can do. She identifies any gaps in learning and targets these gaps well in the planning of activities. The childminder supports children in their next steps in learning. All children make

p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate
Safeguarding is not effective. The childminder has not identified hazards in the garden. She has stored rubbish alongside the pathway near the garden gate of the premises. She uses this pathway as one of the routes to evacuate the children in the event of an emergency. As a result, children's well-being and safety are compromised. However, the childminder has a good understanding of the signs and symptoms of abuse. She knows what action she must take if she has concerns about a child in her care. For example, the childminder knows who to contact and report her concerns to. Parents do not have enough opportunities to contribute to children's ongoing learning. Not all parents receive enough guidance on how they can continue to support children's learning at home.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder plans a range of interesting, fun and motivating experiences based on children's individual interests. She enthusiastically joins in with their play and follows their lead. The childminder promotes children's language and speaking skills well. She speaks to them as they play, builds on their vocabulary and allows them time to respond to questions. Children's emerging mathematical skills are promoted in different ways. They learn about number and size in everyday activities. For example, the childminder supports them to identify numbers on the clocks in the play area. Children sing action songs that rhyme with numbers. They learn to add and take away a number from a total. The children measure and compare the height of their sunflower plants with the childminder. The childminder supports them when deciding which one is taller or shorter.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate
Children's welfare is compromised due to weaknesses in risk assessment practice. However, all other aspects of children's welfare are suitably supported. Children are happy at the setting and show they are confident in the childminder's care. The childminder is a good role model for behaviour and has clear expectations for children. As a result, children are polite, helpful and show consideration for others. Food served at meal and snack times is nutritious and healthy. The childminder makes this a social occasion and encourages conversation with the children. They talk about their favourite food and drink.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
The childminder has good links with the local schools. She helps to ensure that children develop important skills for the next stage in their learning. For example, children concentrate and follow instructions and learn to persist at complex tasks. They maintain a good focus during activities for long periods, using different tools such as rolling pins and cutters. Children shape and manipulate play dough and develop their small-muscle skills well. They learn to do things for themselves and help to cut up fruit for snacks. Children make marks with different writing materials. They show good progress from holding pencil crayons in the palm of their hands to using a thumb and two fingers to grip.
