This provision is good

n The childminder plans a range of activities that interest and challenge children of all ages. Children respond eagerly to the stimulating indoor and outdoor environments and become deeply engaged in their chosen activities. n The childminder knows each child very well. She observes children closely and forms an accurate picture of their development. She uses this to inform her planning and to fill any gaps in children's learning. All children make good progress. n Children form close relationships with the childminder and build friendships across all age groups. All children become considerate of each other in all activities. They share ideas and wait patiently to take turns. Behaviour is very good. n The childminder challenges children to be articulate during their imaginative play. For example, children build a city using a construction set. They create roads for vehicles. The childminder gets children to explain what they are doing and explain their choices.

Children become inquisitive and confidently ask probing questions. n Children delight in the range of opportunities for fresh air and exercise in the outdoor area. They enthusiastically extend their physical skills on large play equipment, such as balancing and rocking apparatus. n The childminder has well-structured communications with a group of fellow childminders. They exchange a wealth of ideas and findings based on their successes. However, the childminder has not yet focused sharply on enhancing the quality of her teaching to improve outcomes for children even further. n Parents say their children love coming to the childminder. They are very pleased with the care and attention the childminder gives their children. From day one, parents contribute information to help a co-ordinated approach. They are pleased with the

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder has a very good knowledge and understanding of her responsibilities to meet all legal requirements. She has clear and comprehensive safety procedures, which she follows closely to promote children's safety. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is alert to any signs that children may be at risk of harm and knows how to report concerns. Children learn to take safe risks and are encouraged to assess levels of safety for themselves. For example, they discuss how to keep safe from possible harm when using outdoor apparatus or during walks in the local area. The childminder regularly evaluates her provision and makes improvements. Her recent evaluation of the indoor environment led her to upgrade and replace flooring and improve the source of natural light in a much-used play space. She is now remodelling how she uses the play space. As a result, children can more easily choose and access the exciting activities and

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children develop good skills in manipulating and exploring objects and materials. For example, children enjoy creating an environment out of sand for their dinosaur models. They scoop sand to create mountains and make caves for dinosaurs. The childminder presses the sand with the children to create a flat surface. Children delight in pressing out defined dinosaur footprints with precision. They count and compare different shapes and sizes while they play. Children develop their hand muscles, to help towards holding a pencil adeptly for writing. The childminder provides a wide range of good-quality resources for children to make marks and patterns on paper. Children identify the letters in their names and learn the sounds that the letters represent. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of how children learn. She knows when to repeat, model or extend words and sentences. The childminder adjusts her teaching to meet

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has high expectations for children and consistently shows them respect and patience. They grow in confidence with the love and praise they receive. In turn, they learn to be kind and to value one another. Children meet their own personal needs very well, given their young age. They enjoy observing and discussing the needs of the family cat and rabbit. For example, they compare their own teeth-cleaning with how a rabbit keeps its teeth healthy and clean. They tend their tomato plants and observe changes. Children learn to look after themselves, each other and their environment.

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain early literacy, mathematical and life skills. They develop positive learning attitudes and enjoy challenges. Children become attentive listeners and apply themselves well to chosen tasks. They learn about places of interest on visits and walks in the local community. Children know how to use a range of books and other methods to research their findings. They are well prepared for the next stage in their education.
