This is a provision that requires improvement
n The childminder does not plan effectively to meet individual children's needs and interests. Therefore, children make slow progress in comparison to their starting points. n The childminder does not ensure the indoor play area has activities that stimulate and maintain children's interest. As a result, she does not consistently keep them fully engaged and motivated to learn. n The childminder does not use the self-evaluation processes well enough to promptly identify and address all areas of development. For example, she has not taken appropriate actions to strengthen the overall quality of teaching and learning. n On occasions, the childminder does not effectively support children's growing awareness of their feelings during their play.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n The childminder develops close relationships with parents. At the start of their children's placement, she obtains information from them about their children's likes and dislikes. In addition, the childminder informs parents about their children's daily care and experiences. n The childminder is at the early stage of supporting children's understanding of behaviour that is unacceptable to help teach them right from wrong. n During activities, the childminder gets down to the children's level and she consistently supervises them to ensure they are safe.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
n The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including the childminder's training certificates, insurance policy, records of attendance and safeguarding policy. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her daily teaching and care practices. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and observed the quality of care and teaching. n The inspector looked at the areas of the home used for childminding purposes. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching and learning and looked at some of the children's assessment records and planning documentation.
p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands how to safeguard and protect children in her care. She is familiar with the signs and symptoms of abuse to children and she knows how to report any concerns to the relevant authorities. The childminder completes the required checks for all adult household members to ensure that they are suitable to be around children. The childminder shares her written policies and procedures with parents, so they know what to expect from her service. The childminder tracks individual children's progress. However, she does not plan and implement opportunities effectively to help children make good progress. Her self-evaluation of the provision is not thorough and effective. Since the last inspection, the childminder has not maintained her professional development in order to help enhance her teaching skills.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder does not effectively use her observations of children to provide opportunities that meet their individual needs. For instance, she does not skilfully support children's early speech and language development. The childminder does not provide a stimulating learning environment for children. For example, the organisation of the indoor play area does not excite children to play with the resources available to them. Instead, children choose to sit on the toys and throw them on the floor. The childminder does not support children to grasp and use a range of toys appropriately and purposefully. Despite this, the childminder provides opportunities for children to perform different movements with their body to help strengthen their larger muscles. For example, she supports them to walk up and down the stairs, and she provides a see-saw for them to move and balance in different positions.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Children show little interest in the resources that the childminder provides for them to explore at her home. They show signs of frustration, and they get upset during their play. The childminder does not support children to handle their feelings and emotions well enough. Despite this, children generally appear settled. They are familiar with the childminder, and they form close bonds with her. The childminder arranges external opportunities for children to develop their social and physical skills. For example, children visit the local park, play groups and children's centre to meet and play with other children and to use the climbing frame and slides safely. The childminder provides healthy food for children to eat, and she cleans their hands before they eat.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
The weaknesses identified in the quality of teaching and learning have impact on the outcomes for children. As a result, children make slow progress with their development. For example, children do not make sounds, babble and use words during their play. They show little interest to play, and they do not use a wide range of resources purposefully. However, they learn to walk and move around freely. They develop their mobility and balance.
