Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The well-qualified childminder is proactive at finding out about changes to early years education. She attends regular training courses and uses her new-found knowledge to support children and their families. For instance, after attending training around positive behaviour, she uses a range of phrases and 'energy words' to encourage children's good behaviour. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands signs that may indicate that a child is at risk from harm and knows how to report these. The childminder carefully monitors children's learning. She identifies any areas where they might be working below expectations. She helps children to work towards 'mini challenges' to help them build up the skills they need and achieve their goals.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is enthusiastic and full of fun. Children respond well and are keen to join in with activities. The childminder shows the children how to wind up toy frogs and place them in the water. The children have at go at this for themselves and show delight when they manage to make the frogs 'swim'. The childminder helps children to make decisions about what they want to do. Children enjoy many craft and cooking activities. The childminder carefully models how to use icing to stick two meringues together. Children listen carefully and have a go at this for themselves. The childminder helps children to use their mathematics skills to count the cakes and work out 'one more'. Children regularly listen to stories and sing their favourite songs. The childminder helps children explore the world around them. She shows children how a caterpillar creates a chrysalis and helps them think about what might happen next.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder embraces children's individual interests and backgrounds. She works with parents to find out about languages children speak at home and learns words from their home languages to use together. The childminder promotes strong morals, such as respect and helping others. She helps children learn about festivals from around the world. Children have many opportunities to practise their small and large physical skills. Children run outside while they move ribbons to create shapes in the air. The childminder sensitively encourages children to communicate when they need the toilet and gives them lots of praise. She skilfully encourages children to talk about their feelings, for instance, by asking them about their 'highs' and 'lows' at the end of the day. Even the youngest children are able to talk about feelings and explain why their drawing of a frog 'feels sad'. Children are confident and talk about what they like to do.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are calm, behave very well and play happily together. They respond well to the calm background music and talk about their favourite songs. Younger children talk as they play and are keen explorers. Pre-school children talk about their home lives and show pride in their achievements. They start to use words to describe position. Older children are encouraged to come up with their own personal goals. For instance, they say they would like to 'learn to swim', 'ride a bike' and even to 'dig to Australia'.
