This provision is good

n The childminder provides a calm and caring learning environment. Children settle well into daily routines and play together in harmony. n The childminder knows children well and supports their learning effectively. Children make good progress in relation to what they knew when they joined the childminder. They are well prepared for the next stages in their learning and development. n The childminder has developed good partnerships with parents. For example, she keeps parents well informed about their children's enjoyment and overall progress. This helps parents to contribute to their children's learning and how to support them at home. n Parents are very pleased with the reliable service they receive. They state that their children are happy and comfortable in the care of this attentive and friendly childminder. n The childminder attends courses to further develop her knowledge and skills. This is evident in the way she talks to children and allows them enough time to respond to

questions and comments. n The childminder misses some opportunities to help extend older children's mathematical skills and how they can solve problems unaided. n Children do not always receive enough opportunities to help them understand about the different people and their communities.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the childminder and children playing inside and outdoors. n The inspector sampled the childminder's policies, procedures, risk assessments and children's development records. n The inspector discussed the childminder's procedures to safeguard children, and her process for reflecting on her practice, including evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises. n The inspector took into account the comments and suggestions of parents and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has completed relevant safeguarding training. She knows about the different types and signs of abuse that may raise child protection concerns and understands her responsibility to report to relevant agencies. The childminder checks the progress of each child and is confident to provide extra support to help children catch up. She forms strong links with other providers when the time comes for the children to move on. The childminder considers the comments and suggestions of parents, children and outside professionals to make continuous improvements to her service.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers relevant information from parents to establish their children's starting points. She uses this information along with her ongoing observations to assess children's learning. The childminder introduces new activities and toys to children and plays sensitively with them. Children relate well to each other and keenly try new learning experiences. They use their imagination well. For example, children can access writing materials and develop good early writing skills. Younger children love to explore technology tools and to find out how things work. Older children can build their favourite models and help to tidy up resources. Children engage well in play and follow their interests.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder talks to children in a calm manner. She offers them reassurance and praise as they learn new skills. Children learn to share toys fairly and take turns. They listen carefully and behave well. Older children are confident to ask for support when needed. The childminder helps children to understand the importance of drinking water when they are thirsty. She also explains to children about their own safety. For example, children learn to handle resources with care. The childminder conducts daily checks on her home and resources to help children remain safe.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn well and any gaps in their learning are closing. Younger children recognise colours and learn to socialise with others. They love to push wheeled toys in the childminder's garden. Older children keenly bounce on the trampoline. They are aware of the changes that happen to the natural world around them. For example, they know that they need to water plants regularly to help them grow. Overall, children develop useful skills for their move on to school.
