Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder does not consistently promote the health and well-being of children. n The childminder's arrangements for assessing children's progress are not rigorous enough. She does not always accurately identify children's stages of development or where they most need support in their learning. n The childminder does not always plan effectively for children's learning, taking account of their abilities or learning styles to help them to make the best progress that they can. n The childminder and her co-childminder do not present a stimulating, welcoming environment, indoors and outdoors, that helps to keep children motivated and interested in a broad range of activities.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder has a close and caring relationship with the childminded children. They approach her for cuddles and enjoy the interaction they receive from her. n The childminder works closely with parents and accommodates their needs. For example, she often takes children to their own home and gets them ready for bed, if parents are working late. n The childminder helps to develop children's communication and language skills. She introduces new vocabulary and encourages younger children to use their words to ask for things, rather than pointing.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

implement more effective use of assessment to identify children's level of achievement and what they need to learn next, and shape learning experiences that help children make the best possible progress. 01/07/2019

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n improve the provision of planned activities, taking into account individual children's interests and abilities, to ensure they are provided with a range of challenging and enjoyable learning experiences n review the organisation of the environment to provide children with welcoming and stimulating spaces that help to capture their interest and keep them motivated.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector observed an adult-led activity and evaluated this with the childminder. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. n The inspector spoke to children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. n The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has recently started working in the home of her co-childminder. They are currently reviewing the way they work together and developing their roles. Some areas of the co-childminder's home are not well organised. For example, the kitchen, dining room and playroom surfaces are cluttered. This limits the amount of clear space available for children to fully explore the extensive range of resources available. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her responsibilities with regards to protecting children. She regularly updates her safeguarding knowledge and demonstrates a good awareness of the signs and symptoms that indicate a child is at possible risk of harm. The childminder reviews and evaluates her provision. She identifies her training needs and seeks appropriate courses to help her to further develop her knowledge.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder observes children's play and uses her observations to inform her assessment of their progress. However, this is not accurate and precise. For example, some data recorded shows children to be working at a much higher developmental level than they are. Therefore, the childminder sometimes uses inaccurate information about children to plan for their development. For example, she does not consistently deliver planned activities and experiences based on children's abilities. Despite this, children enjoy their time with the childminder. They play contentedly with wooden cars and a new floor play mat which they line the cars up on and then roll them off. Children enjoy experiencing new and interesting materials. For example, they make marks on paper with herb and fruit tea bags, and sometimes explore the contents of the tea bag through taste too.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not always use appropriate and hygienic resources for changing children's nappies. Children do not routinely wash their hands before eating meals, and the childminder occasionally serves the meals with her hands rather than with appropriate serving utensils. Children are not always provided with appropriate utensils to eat their meals. Children are encouraged to develop good manners and to respect each other as the childminder reminds them of the importance of treating each other kindly. She offers younger children praise, which helps to build their confidence and self- esteem. Children are provided with opportunities to experience fresh air and exercise when they play in the co-childminder's garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Weaknesses in the childminder's quality of teaching, learning and assessment mean that children do not make the best progress that they can. Despite this, children develop the basic skills they need to move them on to their next stage of learning, including school. Children are beginning to become independent and express their wishes.
