This provision is good

n The childminder has a very professional attitude to her childminding. She reflects on her provision and is constantly planning enhancements to the physical space and her teaching. She undertakes a wide range of short courses, which link into the learning needs of the children. She considers carefully what she has learnt and implements changes to enhance the way she teaches. n The childminder uses her assessments of children's abilities to plan for the next steps in their learning. She provides an exciting range of activities within the home and on numerous trips. She takes the children to a number of unusual activities which provide them with the chance to build new skills, for example, gym, ballet and signing classes. n Children are very independent, and the childminder encourages them to try things for themselves. She supports them to think through problems they may encounter and find solutions. They are developing very good thinking skills.

This provision is good

n The childminder has created a very stimulating outside space which is a particular strength of this setting. Children's imagination and creativity are well supported. They access the craft shed and enthusiastically use a raised playhouse and the mud kitchen. Children enjoy caring for vegetable plants which they can later harvest and eat. n The childminder carefully explains to children how their actions affect others. She helps them negotiate with their friends and learn to manage small conflicts themselves. She encourages children to share how they are feeling and supports children who are sad. n Parents are delighted with the service the childminder provides. They describe her as welcoming, warm hearted and calm. They say she provides an exciting and nurturing environment that has helped their children develop well. n The majority of activities are very well planned and children's communication, literacy

and physical skills are very well supported. n Occasionally, the childminder does not give parents of younger children information about how to extend their children's learning at home.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector completed a discussion about an activity with the childminder. n The inspector had discussions with the childminder and children. She looked at relevant documentation and online records. n The inspector read all the emailed and written testimonials from parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibilities in protecting children from harm. She reviews her risk assessments, considering any local safety issues which are highlighted to her. She ensures her dog is always supervised when near the children. The childminder takes parents' and children's views into consideration when planning improvements to her service. Where children have health conditions, parents report that the childminder is very supportive in helping them implement health professionals' advice. When children attend another provision, she shares information on their development with other providers to obtain a good understanding of children's progress and how she can extend their learning further. She works with the local authority advisers to share her experiences of developing the outside learning environment to enthuse other people.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder encourages children to think for themselves and make their own decisions. She encourages them to 'use their listening ears' to hear and concentrate on the instructions being given before an activity starts. She shows children different ways of doing things and challenges them to come up with their own solutions to problems. For example, children think about what will happen if they shake a bottle of sand without covering the top and work out how to get the last grains of sand from the pot to the bottle. Children's ability to learn to speak clearly is well supported through meaningful conversations. The childminder supports children's spoken language with sign language and introduces new words to their vocabulary. The childminder encourages children to develop confidence in handling books and encourages children to recognise written letters and the sounds they represent through active games.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps children develop a good understanding of how they can help keep themselves and others safe. Children can explain what they need to do to cross a road safely and how to carry a stick without hurting others. The childminder provides meals which are largely home-made and accommodate children with complex allergies or dietary preferences. Children are supported to be very physically active with outside play and walks undertaken daily. The childminder proactively prepares children, both emotionally and with regard to their independence skills, for the move on to school.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are enthusiastic learners, who are very keen to join in with activities, key skills they need for the move on to primary education. They are very confident in their physical abilities. For example, they climb the steps to the raised playhouse and use the slide enthusiastically. They can also carefully spoon sand into small funnels as part of a craft activity. Children are very independent. They can dress themselves and make their own sandwiches at lunchtime. They are developing their imaginations, enjoying using the mud kitchen as a cafe. All children are making at least expected progress in all areas of learning, working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age.
