p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The provider failed to notify Ofsted of a recent incident regarding her suitability that she has now resolved. Furthermore, there is no deputy manager in place. n Children are not all allocated a key person. Staff do not always plan highly challenging activities that take account of children's interests, and individual next steps in learning, to foster best possible progress. n The arrangements and processes for staff's training and support do not focus sharply enough on building on their teaching skills. Children do not benefit from consistently good quality learning experiences. n The provider does not make the best use of monitoring and self-evaluation to help improve the quality of teaching, planning and children's progress.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Staff are welcoming. They get to know children when they first start. Children build positive relationships with staff. They are content and comfortable attending. n The premises are secure. Staff carry out daily safety checks and deploy themselves well between the areas in use, to keep children safe. n Staff promote positive behaviour. They remind children of the nursery expectations. Children follow simple instructions, are polite and behave well. n Parents are happy with the nursery. Staff share information with parents and professionals. This helps to foster some continuity.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n We carried out this inspection as a result of a risk assessment, following information we received about this provider. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outside. She assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector completed a joint observation with the provider and manager of the nursery. n The inspector spoke to staff and held a meeting with the provider and nursery manager. n The inspector looked at relevant documentation and checked evidence of the suitability of all those working in the nursery. n The inspector spoke to parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The provider has been subject to suitability checks and takes full responsibility for running the nursery. However, recently there has been a period of staffing instability. This means there is no deputy manager in post capable of running the nursery if necessary. The provider understands her responsibility to notify Ofsted of significant events. She recently notified Ofsted of a safeguarding incident, involving the use of mobile phones on an outing. However, she does not always successfully apply this knowledge. She has failed to notify Ofsted of a recent incident where her suitability was questioned because she did not see the need to do so. Nevertheless, in both cases she took prompt action to address and resolve the issues. Safeguarding is effective. The provider and staff have a sound understanding of child protection procedures. They know how to respond to different types of concerns. The provider supervises staff and

they benefit from some training, such as safeguarding. This has a positive impact on care practices. However, there is room to improve these processes and build on their teaching practice. The provider aspires to improve. However, she does make the most effective use of monitoring and self-evaluation to help fully address all weaknesses.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The quality of teaching varies. Staff routinely observe children and the provider makes accurate assessments of their abilities. However, children are not always allocated key persons who plan for their individual learning needs. Some activities do not offer high enough levels of challenge or necessary additional support. Overall, the curriculum is generally broad. For example, children like role play in the outdoor play kitchen, playing in the sand, exploring play dough and making collages from materials. This helps to build on their imaginative and creative skills. The manager has a basic overview of children's individual progress. She identifies significant gaps in learning. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities benefit from some suitable support.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children are not always highly motivated to play, explore and ultimately learn. They sometimes struggle to choose what to do and readily join in with activities. Nevertheless, staff promote healthy lifestyles. They offer nutritious snacks and meals and they talk to children about the benefits of eating well. Staff promote hygiene routines. For example, they have recently introduced teeth brushing after lunch. Staff encourage exercise. Children use physical equipment outside, such as wheeled vehicles and the slide.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not always progress as well as possible from where they started. However, overall, children acquire the basic skills they need for school. They gain confidence and independence. They learn to manage their self-care needs with support. Children learn to play well with others, including sharing and taking turns. They develop skills in communication, language and literacy. They learn to express their wants, interests and needs. Children like looking at books and can give meaning to the marks they draw. Children also gain mathematical skills. They play games that require them to match objects to pictures by size and they count up to 15 during routine tasks.
