p.1

This provision is good

n The childminder places a strong focus on helping children develop their language skills. She supports children who speak English as an additional language particularly well. They learn to speak English very quickly. Older children speak using well-constructed sentences. Children flourish in their communication and language development. n The childminder provides a welcoming, inclusive and nurturing environment. Children settle quickly and develop good levels of confidence and self-esteem. Children are emotionally secure in the childminder's care and display their obvious affection for her. n The childminder develops strong partnerships with parents and keeps them fully informed about their children's learning. She shares ideas with parents to help them support learning at home. Parents are very pleased with the quality of care their children receive and state they 'particularly like the family learning environment'.

p.1

This provision is good

n The childminder is well organised and displays a professional approach to her work. She accurately evaluates the quality of her provision and takes into account the views of children, parents and the other childminders who work with her. The childminder identifies where improvements can be made and is committed to providing good quality care and learning experiences. n The childminder is a good role model for children and provides them with sensitive support and guidance. Children learn to take turns and behave very well. n Occasionally, the childminder does not give children sufficient time to develop their understanding during their explorations, before moving them on to other activities. n The childminder does not consistently help children to understand the benefits that exercise and eating healthy foods can have on their bodies and why developing healthy lifestyles are important.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector viewed relevant documentation, including suitability checks, policies and procedures and children's learning records. n The inspector completed an evaluation of teaching with the childminder following a planned activity. n The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation. She took account of the views of parents spoken to during the inspection and from written comments.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is trained as a lead practitioner for safeguarding and displays a very good knowledge of how to keep children safe from harm. She has robust procedures in place to follow should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder accesses training and support from other childminding colleagues. This has a positive impact on her practice and children's learning, overall. The childminder makes accurate assessments of children's learning and reviews their progress each term. This helps her to determine their rates of progress and identify any areas where further support is needed. The childminder has established strong relationships with schools and works closely with teachers. This supports a consistent approach for children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses children's interests, her observations and information from parents to plan activities that support children to gain new knowledge. For example, she provides play resources to help children act out familiar situations, such as going to the doctors. Boys and girls confidently pretend to take the dolls' temperature and blood pressure and put bandages on them. The childminder helps children to understand how to care for people who are ill. She joins in with their play and becomes a playmate. The childminder skilfully uses play experiences to encourage children to write for a purpose. She also teaches children how to hold their pen correctly as they write on the patient record forms. Children are motivated and play together well. They search for 'golden nuggets' in the sand tray outdoors. The childminder models how to use sieves to separate the 'golden nuggets' from the sand.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supports children's physical development well. She takes them on outings to the park and ensures that children play in the garden each day. Children develop good strength, balance and physical control of their bodies. Young children climb the steps of the tall play structure in the garden extremely competently. They show delight as they slide down at speed. Older girls show high levels of energy as they jump enthusiastically across the stepping stones on the grass. The childminder provides clear expectations for children. For example, she reminds them to use their manners when asking for something. She helps children to learn about nature and to care for the environment. Children are gentle and kind. They understand how to care for the sunflowers that they grow in the garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning and development, including those who speak English as an additional language. Children count in order, develop their understanding of shapes and learn about size and distance. Older children are independent in managing their own self-care. They learn to dress themselves and put on their own shoes. Children gain the skills and attitudes they need for their future learning, including starting school.
