p.1

This provision is good

n Children are happy, confident and enjoy interacting with staff and their older peers after their day in school. Staff support and complement children's learning well. n Children's behaviour is very good. They clearly know the routines of the club and respond well to the appropriate boundaries in place. Children are very much part of the club and help to agree codes of behaviour for each other. n Partnerships with the host school are strong and the club has quickly become an integral part of the school. This view is supported by the headteacher who is delighted with the quality of service provided. n The manager supports her staff team well. New systems to monitor the quality of their interactions with children are developing well. This helps staff to continually build upon and develop their skills. n Highly effective arrangements, including safe recruitment procedures, ensure all staff who work at the club are suitable to do so and interact with children.

p.1

This provision is good

n Children are effectively signed in and out of the club daily by parents and staff to keep them safe. Staff know children well and provide a club where children's well-being is given high priority. n The manager has not yet fully considered how she can use the process of self- evaluation to identify clear actions in order to continually improve the quality of the club.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. There is a comprehensive understanding among the staff team of child protection issues. Staff know the signs or symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk of possible harm. They know how to respond and who to contact should they be concerned about a child's welfare. Staff access ongoing training to ensure their knowledge is kept up to date. Daily risk assessments ensure the areas used are safe and good arrangements are in place for the collection of children. For example, parents use the main school doorbell where they are met and escorted into the club by staff. The manager maintains a good overview of activities provided in the club. She continually liaises with her staff team to ensure the experiences provided reflect children's interests. For instance, when children show a keen interest in the theme of space, activities, such as a jigsaw of the planets, are

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children thoroughly enjoy the time they spend in the club after their day in school. They engage well in a wide range of activities and enjoy playing alongside the older children who also attend. Good use is made of routines, such as snack time, to extend younger children's communication skills. Staff sit alongside children as they eat and engage in conversations with them. For example, young children join in with a discussion and share their own experiences of visiting the dentist. Staff work very well with teachers in the host school to provide experiences that complement the skills children learn in school. Opportunities, such as joint meetings with the early years teaching staff, are an integral part of the planning process. Parents are delighted with the quality of the after-school club, particularly with how staff support children's learning. They say staff often listen to children reading their school book to extend children's literacy skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop strong relationships with the friendly and caring staff team. They are warmly welcomed into the club where staff talk to them about their day in school. Parents support this view and make written comments, such as, 'The strength of the provision lies in the relationships staff have with children'. Good-quality information is gathered from parents when children first start attending the club. Information, such as about any allergies or medical needs, helps to provide consistency in the care children receive. Children's physical health is supported well. Staff provide fresh fruit at snack time and children access fresh air within the school grounds. Strong partnerships with school teachers ensures any information regarding children's welfare is shared and effectively passed onto parents.
