This provision is inadequate

n The childminder's safeguarding practices are weak. She does not have a good enough understanding of how to keep children safe. n The childminder does not supervise children effectively. She leaves them to play alone in the garden. At these times, the childminder cannot always hear or see the children. She is not able to ensure their safety should an accident or incident occur. The childminder does not consider the impact of her practice on children's well-being and development. n The childminder's risk assessment procedures are not effective. She does not put in place her identified plans to help minimise risk for children. For example, she does not follow the manufacturer's guidance to help ensure children are safe when using the trampoline. n The childminder does not keep an accurate record of children's attendance. She cannot be sure of the children she has in her care at any one time. This means that children

are placed at risk of harm should, for example, an evacuation of the premises be required.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder provides a wide range of activities that children enjoy. Children enthusiastically recall the childminder's outings that capture their interest. For example, they describe a visit to a mosque and demonstrate how they learn about different cultural practices. n The childminder adapts her teaching to reflect the different learning needs of children. For example, she simplifies questions for younger children and encourages older children to answer 'why' questions. This helps to support their thinking skills successfully. All children make good progress in relation to their starting points.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder about safeguarding, how she evaluates her practice, children's progress and communication with parents. n The inspector reviewed relevant documentation, including records of attendance, qualification certificates, assessments of children's learning, policies and procedures. n The childminder reviewed written feedback from parents. n The inspector observed and evaluated an activity with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate

Safeguarding is not effective. There are significant weaknesses in the childminder's procedures in place to keep children safe. She leaves children unattended in the garden. At such times, the childminder closes doors between the inside and outside. She does not supervise children to ensure their safety. The childminder does not assess risks to protect children effectively. She does not consider guidance available to her on the use of her trampoline. As a result, children are at risk of accident or injury. She does not consistently record the hours that children attend. Therefore, the childminder does not have an accurate record of the children in her care. She has a secure knowledge of different types of abuse and the signs that may indicate a child is at risk of harm. Her childcare qualification underpins her secure understanding of how to assess and plan for children's learning. The childminder seeks to develop her skills. For example, she carries

out research to improve her knowledge of teaching.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder works with parents to make initial assessments of their children's learning. She uses her observations to identify the next steps in children's development. Monitoring of children's progress is effective. The childminder notices when children need extra support. She puts targeted plans in place to help children reach their learning goals. For example, the childminder uses information from her research to plan activities that improve children's speech and language skills. She uses children's interests well to support their learning. For example, the childminder helps children who enjoy pretend play to extend their mathematical skills. She encourages them to count, and to add one more as they pretend to sell ice creams. The childminder helps babies gain key skills to support their future learning. She names the objects they play with. The childminder repeats new words and she comments on children's actions. She supports babies to

understand spoken language. The childminder encourages babies to learn to stand and walk. She supports their physical development well.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

There are significant weaknesses in the childminder's safeguarding practice. The childminder's approach to safety and risk within her home place children at risk of harm. However, she has built secure bonds with children. She interacts with babies sensitively. They respond with enthusiastic babbling and smiles. The childminder provides a wide range of resources that children can access independently. This supports children to follow their own ideas well. The childminder works with parents to support children's care routines effectively. For example, she acts on information about children's sleep patterns at home to encourage tired children to take more rest.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are learning skills that help to prepare them for school. Older children draw and, with support, can write their names. They begin to say the sounds associated with letters. Children play imaginatively with role-play materials as they make up stories. They learn to be independent. For example, older children learn to use the toilet and young children put on their own shoes. Children demonstrate their thinking skills in response to the childminder's skilled questions. For example, they think about ice cream melting and identify that they could not use a fork to eat it easily.
