Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This is a provision that requires improvement
n The childminder does not keep up to date with all statutory training requirements. She does not have a current paediatric first-aid certificate. n The childminder does not use her observations of children's learning effectively to focus sharply on what children need to learn next. Furthermore, the assessment of children's achievements is not precise enough to ensure that their ongoing progress from their starting points is in line with their individual age and stage of development. n On occasion, the childminder does not ensure activities available provide sufficient challenge to extend all children's learning to the highest level. n The childminder does not provide enough opportunities for older children to practise their early handwriting skills. n The childminder does not keep her professional development up to date to raise her skills and knowledge to a good level.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n The childminder has built positive relationships with parents and other professionals to promote continuity in children's care and learning. n Children's good health is promoted well, and children enjoy daily trips to local parks, city farms and museums.
p.1

p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
n strengthen systems for observing children's learning from when they first start and for checking their progress against their age and stage of development n increase the range of activities available and provide greater opportunities for all children to extend their learning to the highest level to help them make the best possible progress n provide greater opportunities for children to practise their early writing skills n explore additional training opportunities to keep professional development up to date and to increase childminding skills and knowledge to a good level.
p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
n The inspector had a tour of parts of the premises used for childminding. n The inspector spoke with children and the childminder at appropriate times. She reviewed an activity with the childminder. n The inspector observed and discussed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this has on children's learning and development. n The inspector viewed written feedback from parents and took account of their views. n The inspector viewed evidence of the suitability of the childminder and household members. She discussed the childminder's self-evaluation information and viewed a range of documentation, including the childminder's first-aid certificate and public liability insurance.
p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
Overall, the childminder reflects on the quality of her practice. However, this is not effective enough to identify weaknesses in her practice to raise the quality of her childcare to a good level. For example, she has not kept her knowledge and skills up to date on relevant childcare matters. The childminder has a current emergency first-aid certificate, but this does not meet requirements. The childminder understands her role to safeguard children from possible abuse and neglect. She has clear procedures in place to report her concerns. The childminder assesses risk in her home and prior to outings to minimise any hazards to children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the importance of working in partnership with parents and staff from other settings children also attend. For example, to help support children who are being toilet trained.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder does not regularly observe children to enable her to plan suitable, challenging activities to meet their growing needs and interests. The childminder has not fully developed assessment and monitoring systems to identify precisely the next steps in children's learning and, subsequently, to provide consistent and appropriate support. As a result, she does not plan effectively to help children make the best possible progress. Occasionally, the resources and activities provided are not suitable for children of different ages to challenge and extend their learning to a higher level. The childminder successfully helps to develop some aspects of children's literacy skills. For example, she helps them to recognise the alphabet and sound out some letter sounds. The childminder promotes children's early mathematical skills, evidenced in the way she helps all children to match and identify different colours.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Even though the childminder has not kept her paediatric first-aid certificate up to date, she clearly explains how she will deal with an accident in an emergency. This means there is no significant impact on children's welfare. The childminder is a positive role model. She promotes good manners effectively and helps to develop children's healthy habits. Children wash their hands before mealtimes and they help the childminder to wash fresh fruit for their mid-morning snack. Children mix with other children and begin to have a sense of identity within their local community. Children enjoyed visiting a local mosque, and they are confident and independent.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Due to weaknesses in leadership and management and in the quality of teaching, children do not achieve as well as possible in their learning and development. However, all children do learn some key skills to prepare them for the next stages in their learning and eventual move to school. Older children develop their self-care skills well and younger children begin to toilet train. All children develop skills in social situations, for example, through regularly attending stay-and-play sessions. They learn to take turns with toys, and confidently communicate their needs and wants.
