This provision is good

n The childminder knows the children well and prioritises their individual care needs. For example, she quickly recognises when toddlers are becoming tired and sensitively rocks them to sleep. Children feel settled and secure in the childminder's company. n The childminder forms strong bonds with the children and shows them affection. They take pleasure in the attention she gives them and enjoy their time at the setting. n Accurate assessments of children's learning help the childminder to identify what each child needs to learn next. The childminder uses this information to plan activities that motivate children to take part and have a go. Children make good progress in their learning. n The childminder reflects on the setting routinely and has plans to enhance children's experiences further. For example, she intends to provide more opportunities for children to play and explore using their senses in the garden.

p.1

This provision is good

n At times, the childminder does not focus as well as possible on children's individual learning needs during planned activities, to help them make as much progress as possible. n Although parents receive regular information about their children's progress, the childminder does not obtain detailed information from parents about children's learning at home.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n develop the planning of activities further, to focus more precisely on children's individual learning needs and help them make more rapid progress n strengthen partnerships with parents to obtain more information about children's learning at home.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children throughout the day. n The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder of a planned activity, to reflect on the quality of teaching and learning. n The inspector spoke with children and the co-childminder to take account of their views. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her practice and procedures. n The inspector sampled a range of documents, including children's learning records, self-evaluation, policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder provides support and coaching for assistants through regular discussion, to ensure their knowledge of the children and procedures is up-to-date. She makes good use of professional development opportunities to strengthen her own knowledge and skills. For example, she has increased her understanding of how to recognise and help children who may require additional support, to assist her in meeting their individual needs more effectively. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows how to recognise signs that a child's welfare may be at risk of harm and how to refer all safeguarding concerns to the relevant agencies.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder understands how children learn and uses their interests effectively to develop their knowledge and skills. For example, she sets out the bubbles, which quickly captures the attention of all children. The childminder encourages children to have a go at blowing bubbles, which they do eagerly before chasing and catching the bubbles with excitement as they float away. The childminder takes part in children's games, providing them with ideas to extend their play. For instance, she shows toddlers how to roll play dough with their hands to make 'snakes', and they try to copy. The childminder models language clearly and simply for younger children and engages the older children in detailed discussions.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The children are confident to make independent choices in their play and manage their own care needs, such as trying to use cutlery at mealtimes and washing their hands. The childminder supports children to behave well and play together harmoniously. For example, she prompts them to take turns to throw balls at skittles and to stand the skittles back up so they can all have a go. Children listen to the childminder and follow her instructions, such as to tidy up the toys. The childminder promotes children's good health effectively. For instance, she provides nutritious, balanced meals and plenty of time to play in the fresh air.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and develop the key skills needed for later learning, including starting school. They are polite and respectful of others, and develop a positive attitude to taking part in a range of activities. Children learn mathematics skills as they match puzzle pieces with pictures and rotate them to fit them in the correct slots. Toddlers investigate what happens as they press buttons on toys and smile happily at the sounds and lights that appear. Older children express their thoughts confidently and clearly.
