their learning and development by building on what they know and can do. n Sometimes, in the childminder's eagerness to support children's play, she does not give them time to respond to her questions or comments. This is especially the case with the youngest children.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection issues and the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child being at risk from harm. The childminder evaluates her practice and she is always considering ways to improve. She is able to discuss how her professional development has influenced her teaching and the positive changes she has made in her practice. The childminder keeps in close contact with parents and regularly exchanges information with them, to help keep them informed about the care and learning their children receive. She sends out regular newsletters to parents to keep them updated with events.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder follows children's interests to keep them motivated and supports them in learning new vocabulary and ideas. She speaks Czech and Spanish to them so that they hear the sounds of different languages. She reads them their favourite books with puppets and talks about the pictures. She incorporates mathematics and language into their everyday play. This was evident in the way children counted as they hopped into chalk circles drawn on the ground. The childminder helps to develop children's hand muscles, for example, by encouraging them to thread pasta tubes on straws. There are mark-making resources, such as paper and crayons, so children can draw pictures and develop their early writing skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder ensures that the children have a safe space to play and explore which helps them to develop good levels of self-confidence and independence. The childminder gives children clear explanations about why they do things, such as when she encourages children to tidy activities away and to look after the toys. The childminder talks to them about the natural world and how plants survive. She also explains about jobs people do, such as a postal worker or a builder. She supports healthy eating and provides nutritious food and fruit for the children. She is keen to make sure children know how to keep themselves safe. This was clear in the way she talked to them about crossing the road safely as they walked outside.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. Young children learn to explore words and sounds in rhymes and songs. Older children learn numbers and shapes and enjoy doing different kinds of puzzles. All children gain a wide range of skills which help prepare them for the next stage of their learning. Children learn to listen and to be tolerant of each other. Children enjoy physical activities, such as walking across the grass to feed the ducks in the local park. They also visit the local library and museum. Children are motivated to learn and show high levels of well-being.
