p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder is professional and well organised. Robust policies and procedures are in place that help to maintain good outcomes for children and ensure the childminder meets all early years requirements. The childminder is a reflective practitioner. She is starting to evaluate on the service she provides and values parents' and children's comments to make improvements for better outcomes for the children. The childminder works closely with the local authority and with a childminding group. This helps her to keep up to date with any changes in legislation. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder regularly attends training that updates her knowledge around child protection issues. She knows the procedures to follow to report child protection concerns to the relevant professionals.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is an extremely confident and effective communicator with children of different ages and abilities. She has an excellent approach in the ways she adapts activities to incorporate children's individual needs. For example, she plans a building activity for older children to develop their mathematical and physical skills. She introduces sand and different textures so that younger children who are exploring with their senses can play alongside toddlers. The childminder gets down to children's level and is playful in her interactions, which stimulates them to join in. For example, the childminder develops very young children's understanding of body parts as she playfully sings nursery rhymes and points out the different body parts. The childminder uses assessments to plan activities that help children to make good progress.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder encourages children to be independent and to make their own choices. Children put on their shoes and help to prepare the morning snack. The childminder takes a great deal of time and consideration in explaining why they do certain things. For example, she discusses why they need to wash and dry their hands carefully. The childminder promotes children's healthy lifestyles well. Children are given plenty of opportunities for fresh air, rest and relaxation. They learn how to keep themselves safe in the sun. The childminder reminds children to stay hydrated and to play in the shade. The childminder is involved with many local community events and uses these to provide children with opportunities to learn about cultures and faiths other than their own. Young children are extremely well behaved and are friendly towards each other and the childminder. Young toddlers are learning to say 'please' and 'thank you' at mealtimes.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in relation to their starting points and are working in the stages typically expected for their age. Young toddlers develop good social and emotional skills as they begin to develop confidence in larger groups in preparation for their next stage in learning. Young children show increasing ability to use resources independently and persevere to learn new skills. Children are creative and learn to use their imagination successfully, such as pretending to work and fix the 'broken' door and wall. Children show curiosity in their learning.
