p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder's arrangements for maintaining records are generally satisfactory. However, she does not consistently record children's names and hours of attendance daily. That said, this does not have a significant impact on children's safety and therefore safeguarding is effective. The childminder is alert to possible signs of children being at risk of harm. She confidently describes the local procedures to implement if she has concerns about children's safety. She completes assessments of her home and on outings. She identifies and minimises potential risks, particularly regarding pets. The childminder completes mandatory training, such as safeguarding and first aid. However, she does not target her ongoing professional development to raise the overall quality of her practice.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
Parents contribute to children's initial assessments. However, the childminder does not consistently encourage parents to share ongoing information about children's learning. In addition, she does not make regular assessments of children's learning or keep parents effectively informed about children's progress. That said, the childminder uses her observations and knowledge of how children develop to plan a range of learning experiences. These generally match children's learning needs and offer appropriate challenge. For example, as children enjoy sharing a book, the childminder asks younger children to point to the picture of a sun. She encourages older children to count how many animals they can find on the page. This supports their early mathematical development. The childminder helps children to develop their early language skills. For instance, she playfully says, 'Choo, choo' as younger children enjoy playing with trains.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
She extends older children's range of vocabulary as she discusses the colour and size of trains.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children have frequent opportunities to be active and access fresh air. For example, they enjoy using play equipment in local parks. They strengthen their balance and coordination as they enthusiastically join in with action rhymes. Children make healthy choices and enjoy freshly prepared snacks. The childminder takes children on a variety of outings. For example, they visit farms and libraries. This helps children to increase their awareness of the world around them. The childminder helps children to learn about other people, communities and cultures in the world. For example, she provides a range of resources that represent diversity. She plans activities to explore celebrations in other cultures. The childminder encourages children to do things for themselves, such as tidying up.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Weaknesses in sharing information with parents and assessment impact on children's ability to make consistently good progress. However, children are developing some of the key skills to prepare them for their next stage in learning. They show suitable social skills, such as sharing toys with their friends. They show confidence. For example, they invite visitors to join in with their play. Children concentrate when engaged in activities.
