This is a provision that requires improvement
n Children's safety is not given high enough priority. The childminder does not ensure all hazards in the environment are kept to a minimum. This is also a breach of the Childcare Register requirements. n The childminder's self-evaluation methods are not fully secure. She has only just begun to reflect on her practice and is in the process of improving her teaching and learning environment. n The childminder's method to track children's progress is new. Although she identifies gaps in children's development and addresses these, some areas of learning have less of an emphasis, for example information technology within understanding the world.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n Since her last inspection, the childminder has addressed most of the actions set and shows a positive attitude to improving her setting. She has updated her knowledge and understanding of child protection issues. She is confident about the procedure to take if she is worried about a child. n Teaching and children's learning outcomes are good. The childminder's interaction and support for children are purposeful and match children's needs. The childminder has clear learning aims to help children achieve and make good progress. n The childminder's calm and caring nature helps children feel happy and emotionally secure in the homely environment. There is a good choice of play opportunities, both inside and outside, which appeals to children with different learning styles.

p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder does not fully meet all legal requirements, although this does not have a significant effect on outcomes for children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has attended training and shows a clear understanding of the wider aspects of safeguarding. For example, she learned about people with extreme views and forced marriages. The childminder has a designated and safe play area for children within her home and supervises children appropriately. The childminder reflects on some aspects of her work and evaluates her service. However, she does not successfully identify and target weaknesses. For example, she has not removed risks in the bathroom children use. The childminder develops friendly and communicative relationships with parents. Parents are very positive in their verbal and written feedback about the childminder.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder places a strong focus on encouraging young children's communication and language skills. She sits close to children, when playing and learning together. The childminder maintains good eye contact and talks to children clearly, introducing new vocabulary. For example, the childminder displayed animal photographs on a wall for children who have a keen interest in animals. She repeated animal names the children pointed to, encouraged them to say animal sounds and talked about the 'hutch' she could see. The childminder engages in playful interactions when children spontaneously pick up resources which stimulate them. For example, she sang a favourite number rhyme with a hand puppet as children banged the drum. The childminder follows children's interests and encourages their physical development well. Children enjoy lots of play outdoors with equipment, such as water play with bubbles and balls.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Children's welfare is not fully supported as some risks, such as hazardous liquids, are within children's reach. Children build a strong and trusting relationship with the childminder. They behave well and receive positive praise and clear guidance from her. The childminder supports children's good health. For example, she provides active play outdoors in the fresh air and provides regular snacks to meet children's dietary needs. The childminder works well with parents and other settings the children attend. She shares information on children's progress and gives ideas on how parents can support their child's learning at the weekend. The childminder is responsive to children's care needs. For example, she makes sure children wear a hat when they play in the sun.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Young children develop strong levels of confidence and good speaking skills. For example, young children copy the word 'stegosaurus' and are keen to speak two words together. They engage with the childminder well and show increased concentration and attention, specifically when looking at favourite books together. Children enjoy exploring and investigating the environment with a strong interest. For example, they learn to kick and throw the ball. Children have fun, taking turns with the childminder, pouring water from a teapot into a cup. Children are starting to count and enjoy number songs and music. They happily move their bodies as they join in with elements of the song.
