This provision is good

n Children behave very well. They move around the setting easily and can confidently ask for things that are not visible. The childminder consistently manages behaviour. Children understand the rules and boundaries and independently follow routines. n Children's progress is monitored regularly and any gaps in their learning are quickly identified. The childminder responds well to children's interests. She uses information to plan activities that challenge children and support their learning. n Children develop an understanding of their world and community. They often go out on outings and reflect on these experiences later. They talk about their families, pets and holidays, recalling and discussing their memories about such events. n The childminder takes the time to settle children and get to know parents. She engages parents in their children's learning and regularly shares information about the progress children make.

p.1

This provision is good

n The childminder does not always fully utilise all training opportunities to keep up to date with changes and support her professional development. n Occasionally, children's literacy development is not promoted during activities that interest and motivate children.

n strengthen methods for professional development to help keep up to date with changes and to raise the quality of provision to the highest level n create more opportunities to encourage children to practise and develop their literacy skills in ways that interest and motivate them.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed children during play inside and outside. n The inspector sampled documents, including safeguarding policies, children's progress reports and registration documents. n The inspector and the childminder took part in a joint observation. n The inspector sampled parents' written feedback and took into consideration their views. n The inspector held discussion with the childminder and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder knows the children well. She gives them time to settle and to understand their needs and interests. She identifies their starting points and monitors progress regularly. Any gaps in their development are identified early. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows what to look for and the procedure to follow if she has a concern about a child's welfare. The childminder evaluates her practice and shares this with parents. She regularly asks parents for their feedback and implements any suggested improvements. Parents share how happy they are with the care that their children receive. They feel that their children's needs are met well and that the childminder takes time to support them to feel settled and secure in her care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's play well. She asks age-appropriate questions and comments on children's play. For example, when children play with the dinosaurs, she offers ideas about how they can extend their play by building a forest for them to hide in. Children's mathematical development is supported throughout play. The childminder encourages children to find different amounts of things and to group items together. The childminder responds well to children's needs and requests. She adapts activities following individual interests. This means children stay interested and focused for longer.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The environment is welcoming and children are settled. Children enjoy healthy snacks and follow routines well. Children's independence is encouraged and those who need extra support with care routines are supported well. Children clearly understand that they must put their shoes on when they want to go outside and confidently remove them again and store them away when they return inside. Children know to tidy up when they are finished with an activity. Children share memories with each other and talk about their families and places they have visited.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are imaginative and develop their creativity in ways that suit their interests. They use different resources to explore cause and effect. Children push cars down a wooden ramp to see which ones travel the furthest and the fastest and work out why this might be. Children are motivated to learn and develop the skills they need for the next stage in their development.
