Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The quality of teaching is not consistently good. The childminder does not have a strong enough understanding of how to assess children's progress. This includes the progress check for children aged between two and three years. This impacts on her ability to ensure children are consistently supported to make good progress in their learning and development. n The childminder does not provide children with all the support they need to improve their literacy skills when they are interested and eager to name and sound the letters of the alphabet. n The childminder does not work well enough with other settings that children also attend. This means children do not fully benefit from continuity in their learning.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children benefit from spending time playing with the abundance of good-quality resources indoors and outdoors. They learn to initiate their own play and follow their own interests. n The childminder supports children's emotional well-being effectively. She is sensitive and responsive to children's needs. Children develop close bonds with her. They are happy and settled in her care. n The childminder undertakes training and works closely with parents to meet the needs of children who have severe allergies. n The childminder has a strong understanding of her safeguarding responsibilities. She provides good levels of supervision for children and she maintains all necessary records for the safe and efficient management of her provision.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date improve knowledge and understanding of how to assess children's progress to complete a progress check for children aged between two and three years 07/06/2019

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n develop partnership working with other settings that children attend to provide continuity in their learning.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the quality of teaching indoors and outdoors. She assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector evaluated an activity with the childminder. n The inspector spoke to children during the inspection and took into account the views of parents from their written comments. n The inspector looked at relevant documentation. This included evidence of the suitability of the childminder and adults living on the premises.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder undertakes training to update her knowledge of child protection. She knows the procedures to follow if she has a concern about a child. The childminder takes all necessary steps to keep children safe and secure as they play, rest and explore the outdoors. The childminder seeks the views of parents as part of her self-evaluation. Parents' responses demonstrate high satisfaction levels. The childminder has recently accurately identified some of the weaknesses in her knowledge and skills. However, she has not identified the need to improve partnership working with other settings that children also attend.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Teaching is variable. The childminder has a general overview of children's progress. However, she does not regularly consider children's stage of development and individual learning needs well enough to help promote their best possible progress. This also impacts on her ability to complete a progress check for children aged between two and three years. The childminder supports children's interest in books and mark-making effectively. Children know they can obtain information from books and they enjoy making marks using an array of different tools. However, the childminder is less skilled is supporting children who are interested and eager to name and sound the letters of the alphabet. The childminder encourages children to recall experiences and to express their preferences, such as what song they would like to sing. She supports children's interest in number and counting. The childminder models how to play and use resources, such as

musical instruments that require children to blow into them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder successfully helps children to feel safe, secure and at ease. Children show good levels of confidence and independence as they explore their surroundings. They demonstrate their ease as they help to find their sleep beds and settle quickly into sleep after lunch. The childminder helps children to learn to recognise and value differences in themselves and others. They find out about different festivals, customs and traditions using a range of activities. Children learn to be polite and consider others. They say please and thank you. They share and take turns to use resources. Children spend lots of time playing outdoors, being physically active and gaining increasing control over their bodies. During all activities the childminder helps children to think about the steps they can take to keep themselves safe.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are not as well prepared for the next stage of their learning and school as they could be. That said, children are gaining some of the skills they need for their future learning. Children enjoy demonstrating what they know and can do. They are eager to count and name the colours they see in the garden. They listen to and follow instructions to learn how to make different sounds using new musical instruments. Children are developing their social and communication skills. They take part in conversations and take time to consider the questions they are asked.
