p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate

Safeguarding is ineffective. The childminder has a poor understanding of her role and responsibility to safeguard children, including meeting and implementing the early years requirements. She has not informed Ofsted of her assistants, so required checks can be completed to ensure their suitability to work with children. The childminder has a limited knowledge of safeguarding matters, for example identifying when a child is at risk or what to do if there is an allegation made against her or her assistant. The childminder holds informal meetings with her assistant to talk about the provision and share information regarding the childcare. However, she is unable to identify weaknesses in the practice. For example, the childminder fails to keep an accurate attendance register and she does not record the required information for all children in her care. She does not ensure that the space available is suitable for the number of children in her care. During

the inspection, children sat at tables without having enough space to move around. This also poses a risk to children as they are prone to trip and get hurt.

p.4

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is inadequate

The childminder does not plan activities and resources for children to help them engage in play and learning. There are limited resources available for children to choose from. The childminder hands out some workbooks and says to the children that they should choose something they know. The childminder and her assistant fail to provide clear instructions to all the children as to what they need to do and how. Activities and tasks are not age-appropriate and do not take the interests of the children into consideration. This results in children being disengaged. When children read from the books, the childminder listens. However, the television in the background distracts the children from staying on task.

p.4

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

The childminder does not ensure that she or people working with the children have a valid paediatric first-aid certificate. This means that the welfare of the children is at risk should there be an accident. Additionally, the childminder does not ensure that the environment used for childminding is safe and secure. Children have access to cleaning products, and visitors who are at the home during childminding hours are unsupervised and in areas where children are in. The bathroom children use is not risk assessed and compromises children's safety. There are razors in reach of children. Children are sufficiently supervised during outdoor play. They enjoy playing games outside, including 'It' where children have to avoid being 'tapped' by another child. This helps them to keep active. However, there are very limited resources or activities available for the children who are not participating in the games. This does not help to promote equality. The

childminder does not provide balanced and nutritious snacks and meals. Children talk about having hot dogs, burgers, pasta and chips but no fruits or vegetables. During the inspection, children had rice with chicken. Those who did not like that meal had chocolate cereal instead.
