cares for. She encourages them to play an active role in their children's learning. Parents help to determine their children's next steps in learning to help them to make good progress. Parents spoken to at the time of the inspection comment that they are confident in the childminder's care, and state that their children really enjoy being with her. n At times, the childminder asks children too many questions in quick succession, and she does not provide them with time to consider their responses. n Occasionally, the childminder places too much emphasis on following routines and ensuring that children are always in her immediate sight. This prevents children from fully engaging in their chosen play at their own pace.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n allow more time between questions to children to enable them to think, evaluate and consider their answers n review the way in which routines and the supervision of children are organised to enable children to fully engage in chosen play at their own pace.

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder demonstrates secure knowledge of the indicators that might suggest a child may be at risk of abuse or exposed to extreme views. The childminder regularly updates her safeguarding knowledge through appropriate training and by researching new guidance. The childminder has effective arrangements for risk assessing her home to ensure that children play in a safe and secure environment. She ensures that visitors to the premises are supervised at all times. The childminder has recently taken a break from childminding in her own home due to a leak at the premises. She has maintained regular contact with the minded children throughout this time. This has helped the children to settle back into her care confidently. The childminder occasionally works with one of two assistants. She has robust procedures in place for ensuring the suitability of assistants and regularly meets

with them to review their working practices and training needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well. She plans activities based on their interests and capabilities. For example, children have fun in the garden by pretending to make dinner with a range of mud, sand, water and leaves. Some children confidently fetch water from the water butt, while others add the dry ingredients and stir the mixture. The childminder supports their play by encouraging them to add different materials. Children use numbers in their play. For example, the childminder encourages them to count how many steps they take going up the ladder to the slide. Children enjoy listening to a favourite story. They use the visual props provided by the childminder to fully engage in the story and add their prop at the appropriate time.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children enter the childminder's care with confidence. They part from their parents with ease and immediately settle to explore the resources available to them. The childminder encourages children to consider each other's feelings and to be caring. For example, she reminds them to say sorry if they have accidently hurt each other, or taken a toy from another child. Children behave in a way that demonstrates that they feel safe and comfortable in the childminder's care. They confidently ask the childminder questions and articulate their feelings well. Children develop an understanding about eating a healthy diet. For example, the childminder talks to them about foods that are good for them. Children enjoy participating in physical play opportunities, such as using the slide in the garden and joining in with a game of football.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They develop the skills they need for their next stage of learning, such as school. For example, they confidently take their shoes off and replace them when they go into the childminder's garden. Children count to ten and above. They join in with imaginative play, such as being doctors and nurses and using the doctor's kit. They share real stories about medical experiences from home with the childminder and each other.
