This provision is good

n The childminder knows children and their families well. She gathers extensive information to help her to learn about individual families and successfully meet the needs of children. n The childminder provides a wide range of resources to expand on children's interests. When children show an interest in cars, she provides large cardboard tubes for children to push the cars through. This stimulates their problem-solving skills as they work out where the cars have gone. n The childminder supports children's learning well. She observes them as they play and tracks their development over time. n Children's behaviour is excellent. The childminder gives them clear direction and sensitive, caring support. Children learn to share and take turns and play together well. The childminder takes children to groups outside of the home, to help them to learn to play and learn in large groups in readiness for starting pre-school.

This provision is good

n Although there is a range of drawing materials available for children, the childminder does not always encourage older children to put their early writing skills into practice in meaningful contexts. n The childminder's assessments do not always keep up with children's rapid progress. As a result, occasionally, the childminder's next steps in learning for children are not highly challenging.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector discussed a planned activity with the childminder. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder and children at suitable times. She looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of the childminder and household members. n The inspector read and took account of the written feedback provided by parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good awareness of child protection issues. She confidently talks about the possible signs and symptoms that might indicate children are at risk of harm. She knows how to refer any such concerns to the Local Safeguarding Children Board. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder works effectively with parents. She shares information with them to help them to support children's learning at home. The childminder increases her knowledge and skills through undertaking regular training. She uses her experiences to review her practice and make ongoing improvements.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder reads traditional fairy tales to children. She brings these to life by having cut out characters for children to play with and use to act out the story. The childminder changes the pitch and tone of her voice, deepening and shouting for the giant. This makes children giggle loudly and they interact with the story characters and sustain their attention. The childminder promotes children's communication and language skills well. She provides a running commentary of daily activities, to help children to hear language as they play. The childminder expands children's interest in the natural world. They plant beans and watch them grow, observing the changes that happen.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are confident, self-assured and well settled in the childminder's care. They quickly feel confident in the warm and welcoming environment the childminder provides. Children have ample opportunities to increase their physical skills. Young children climb up and sit on the sofa and roll soft balls to each other. Outdoors, children enjoy using apparatus at the park and test out their increasing strength, coordination and balance. The childminder encourages children to learn about being healthy and managing their own personal needs. Children enjoy meals together and talk happily as they eat. The childminder knows how to manage children's diet when they have allergies and takes preventative steps to help minimise any likely risks for them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are curious and take interest in everything around them. Any gaps in children's learning are closing and they make consistently good progress from their starting points. Children are developing a sense of humour and an ability to interact well verbally and by using their body language. When they hear music or sing to themselves, children move their whole bodies as they express their enjoyment of sound and song. Children are quickly acquiring the essential skills that they need to be ready for moving on in their learning and, eventually, starting school.
