and young people since the most recent full inspection

Since the full inspection in July, the registered manager has moved to another home in the company. The acting manager is in the process of becoming registered and has a level 5 diploma in leadership and management. The home is well maintained and has a lovely, homely feel. Staff help children to personalise their bedrooms, and photographs of the children are on display. Children are cared for by a consistent staff team, and staff talk enthusiastically about the children and their achievements. Children say that they like living in the home and that they feel cared for and happy. Staff help children to attend therapy and to participate in a range of activities which support their emotional progress and improve their life experiences. When appropriate, managers work with education professionals and social workers to ensure

that children are allocated a school place. They advocate for children in the way that a good parent would. As a result, children are progressing in education from their starting points. The registered manager uses monitoring systems to evaluate the quality of care and to support staff to improve the daily experiences of children. Children are encouraged to participate in decisions about their care. When children are unhappy or feel unfairly treated, staff take immediate action and they help children to complain. Complaints by children are fully investigated and children are kept up to date. Consequently, children feel heard and that their views are important. Staff are helped to understand children’s complex behaviours through plans that give advice on behaviour management. Staff use techniques to de-escalate behaviours and they use physical intervention as a last resort. After a physical intervention, staff offer

care and nurture. They talk with children about how they feel, and they try to repair the relationship as soon as possible. However, on two recent occasions staff have not followed procedures and children have not had the opportunity to share their views. Staff have also not had the opportunity to talk about their experiences. This is a missed opportunity for staff to understand the child’s experiences and for overall learning which could improve the quality of care. Detailed risk assessments advise staff about known risks and the actions that they should take to keep children safe. Staff carry out regular health and safety checks including regular fire safety checks. Recently, a planned meeting to discuss fire safety with a child has not taken place. This means that the child has not been helped to understand how planned evacuations of the home help to keep children safe.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people.
