p.1

This provision is inadequate

n The childminder has failed to notify Ofsted of significant changes to her health that may affect her ongoing suitability. n Children's safety, health and welfare are significantly compromised. The childminder does not manage risks to children's health and safety appropriately. She does not take the necessary steps to store food safely. This is regarding meals sent in from home, such as cooked meats, that are not stored at the correct temperature. n The childminder does not plan and provide daily outdoor play activities or support children's current interests and healthy lifestyles. n The childminder has not developed effective partnerships with other settings that children attend. She does not share information as a two-way process. The childminder does not share what she knows about children with other practitioners. Furthermore, when some information is shared with her, she does not use it adequately to promote

continuity in children's learning and development. n The quality of the childminder's teaching is poor. For instance, she does not engage adequately with children or provide them with appropriate levels of challenge. Children do not make the progress of which they are capable.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children demonstrate that they are settled in the childminder's care. They are polite and behave well. n The childminder forms positive relationships with parents. She provides parents with updates about children's care at the end of the day. n Children demonstrate confidence in their own abilities and are self-motivated learners.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector looked at the areas of the premises that are used for childminding, including the outdoor area. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector completed an evaluation of an activity with the childminder. n The inspector discussed self-evaluation, risk assessments and the childminder's policies and procedures. She checked evidence of the childminder's suitability and training certificates. n The inspector spoke to some parents and took account of their views. She also took account of written feedback they had provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate

Safeguarding is not effective. The childminder is not meeting all the requirements of the early years foundation stage. She has not notified Ofsted of significant changes to her health to allow suitability checks to be carried out. The childminder does not reflect on her practice sufficiently to ensure that the provision is of a good standard. That said, the childminder holds a current paediatric first-aid qualification and has accessed safeguarding training. She is aware of possible signs of abuse and the procedures to follow if she has any concerns about the welfare of a child. She knows how to respond to any wider safeguarding issues related to the 'Prevent' duty guidance.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is inadequate

The childminder does not sufficiently use information from the assessments she makes of children's learning. She does not engage adequately with children and her interactions lack challenge. For instance, the childminder points to pictures and instructs children to name items, such as shapes and letters. Children quickly lose interest in the activity and tell her, 'I've had enough'. When children ask to draw instead, the childminder does not adapt the activity to suit their current interests. She does not recognise when children show signs that they lack the motivation to join in. Furthermore, the childminder does not make use of information gained from key persons about how they are supporting younger children's learning elsewhere. For example, she does not provide opportunities to extend their current interests in climbing, running and building outside. This is because the childminder does not plan or provide children with daily outdoor play

activities when in her care. This is also a breach of the statutory requirements. Additionally, the childminder does not share what she knows with others, such as her successful strategies to promote children's positive behaviour. Nevertheless, she provides some toys that children access freely, such as cars and a garage.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Weaknesses in leadership and management have a significant impact on children's safety and welfare. The childminder fails to recognise or minimise potential hazards to children. Despite accessing food safety training, she does not complete effective risk assessments. Children's meals sent in from home are not stored at an appropriate temperature, in line with food hygiene guidelines. For instance, on the day of the inspection, food, including meat, was left in a carrier bag by a hot radiator from when children were dropped off in the morning until teatime. The childminder gave this food to children for their tea, when they returned from their day in nursery and school. This significantly compromises children's health. Children demonstrate suitable self-care skills. For example, they use the toilet independently and put on their shoes when it is time to go home.

p.3

Outcomes for children are inadequate

The weaknesses in the childminder's teaching mean that children do not make the progress of which they are capable. Younger children are not prepared well enough so that they are ready for the next stage in their learning or school. The childminder does not plan activities and experiences that adequately promote children's learning or current interests. This limits children's opportunities to meet the typical levels of development.
