p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The provider does not ensure that Ofsted is kept informed of any significant events in the nursery. n Some staff do not ensure that they support children's well-being as much as possible, particularly in the baby room. They do not ensure that effective steps are taken to promote the babies' consistent health and well-being. n The provider has not ensured that staff identify children's starting points on entry. They do not accurately monitor and assess all children's progress over time to recognise gaps in their learning and seek appropriate support to help children catch up quickly. n The provider does not monitor staff practice as well as possible. She does not provide staff with an effective and well-established programme of support to help improve their knowledge and skills, and tackle underperformance swiftly and improve outcomes for children. n The provider does not evaluate effectively to identify areas for improvement and

address them swiftly to improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Staff form positive partnerships with parents. They share a range of information with parents about their child's day, accidents and incidents. Parents report that they are pleased with the provision and how well staff keep them informed. n Staff support children to be independent, even from a very young age. Babies are encouraged to feed themselves, while older children are given the opportunity to serve their own food. n Staff provide many interesting toys, resources and activities which help to keep children curious and engaged.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n strengthen support for all staff so they improve their knowledge and skills and have a better understanding of how to support children in their learning and raise the quality of teaching n improve the self-evaluation processes to ensure weaknesses are quickly identified and actioned in a timely manner.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector had a tour of the premises with the manager and discussed the premises and children's safety. n The inspector spoke to the manager and staff and engaged with the children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector observed staff interactions with the children during indoor and outdoor play, at lunchtime and during hygiene routines. n The inspector engaged in a joint observation with the manager and discussed the quality of teaching. n The inspector sampled various documents, including risk assessments, accident and incident records, children's records, and a range of policies and procedures such as safeguarding.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The provider does not successfully evaluate to identify weaknesses in the provision. For example, she does not ensure all staff conduct effective hygiene practices to help promote children's health and well-being. She does not ensure Ofsted is informed of any significant changes in the nursery. This is a breach in the requirements. The manager does not provide effective support for staff and ensure their continuous professional development, although staff do attend some training and occasionally meet with their manager for supervision and staff team meetings. These have not been effective enough to highlight areas where some staff lack understanding of how best to support and monitor children in their learning. As a result, all children do not make the best possible progress. Safeguarding is effective. All staff have a clear understanding of how to keep children safe and the procedures to follow should they have a concern about a child's

welfare. The manager follows effective recruitment procedures and checks staff's ongoing suitability. The premises are well maintained, safe and suitable for children. Staff complete regular risk assessments to identify and minimise any hazards to children. Staff are suitably deployed and supervise children well. They ensure all accidents and incidents are recorded and parents are promptly informed. The manager implements clear policies and procedures, including ratio requirements and for staff's conduct.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Staff's teaching skills are variable. They do not identify children's starting points effectively to help ensure planning is accurate. Some staff do not have a secure understanding of how children learn and are not confident in their ability to monitor children's progress. As a result, gaps in some children's learning are not quickly identified. However, staff interact with children well and join them in their play. Staff support children's physical skills well. For example, they ensure that children have plenty of opportunities to be active outdoors. They provide lots of space for babies to move about confidently and independently. Staff provide a variety of experiences for children, which they enjoy. For instance, they encourage older children to join in different games indoors and outdoors, while younger children and babies explore with water and sand.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Staff do not fully motivate all children to learn due to weaknesses in teaching, but they are attentive to children's needs and help them to settle well. They do not ensure that hygiene routines for babies, particularly at mealtimes, are consistently promoted to fully support children's health. Staff develop positive relationships with children and encourage children to be kind and to share. Staff offer lots of praise for children to support their confidence and self-esteem. Overall, children behave well.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

All children do not make consistently good progress overall because of variations in the quality of teaching and assessment. However, children, including those with special educational needs, develop suitable skills for their next stages in learning and their move to school. For example, children develop personal self-care skills. Children learn to count and older children practise their literacy skills.
