p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate

The childminder does not keep her skills and knowledge up to date. As a result, there are breaches of the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register requirements. Safeguarding is ineffective. The childminder lacks knowledge of current safeguarding matters, including being alert to signs that children may be at risk of being exposed to extreme ideas. In addition, she does not understand safeguarding procedures in relation to who to notify if an allegation is made against herself or other household members. The childminder has not informed Ofsted of some of the people living on the premises, to enable all of the required suitability checks to be completed. This puts children at risk. Furthermore, the childminder is not routinely recording children's daily attendance. Therefore, children's safety is compromised.

p.4

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is inadequate

The childminder does not identify starting points for children. Furthermore, she does not make routine assessments of children's development. As a result, the childminder does not plan well enough to meet children's individual learning needs. In addition, the childminder does not review children's progress as required between age two and three years. This means that she cannot easily identify when children are at risk of falling behind in their development. However, the childminder provides a range of activities to cover the key areas of learning and development. Children play imaginatively together as they build using construction toys. The childminder interacts with them in a positive way as they play. She asks questions to prompt their thinking and introduces new vocabulary.

p.4

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

The childminder does not help children to understand the importance of some safety issues. For example, when children stand on chairs, she does not explain to them that this puts them at risk of injury. This means that children are not learning to assess risk for themselves and keep themselves safe. However, children enjoy the childminder's company and are settled and comfortable in her care. They respond well to her warm, friendly manner and understand the routines in her home. Children have daily opportunities to be physically active and they follow thorough hygiene routines. Children learn that they need to wash their hands after using the bathroom and before meals and snacks.

p.4

Outcomes for children are inadequate

Children do not make the progress they are capable of because teaching does not focus on their individual needs and next steps for learning. They do not acquire all of the skills they need to prepare them well for their future learning. Despite this, older children count and use numbers in their play. They confidently match and sort objects by colour. Younger children enjoy looking at books, listening to stories told by older children. Children of all ages enjoy playing musical instruments and exploring the different sounds they make, and enthusiastically sing nursery rhymes as they play music.
