Information about this children’s home

Enforcement action since last inspection: none

p.1

and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged good at the last full inspection. At the interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has sustained effectiveness.

p.1

and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home is led well by a qualified and experienced registered manager, who has been in post since January 2018. The post-holder is currently on a planned and agreed period of extended leave and there are suitable contingency arrangements in place to ensure that the home operates in line with the aims and ethos of the statement of purpose.

p.1

and young people since the most recent full inspection

At the last inspection, four requirements were set, along with one recommendation. These, except for one requirement, have been successfully addressed, leading to improved outcomes for young people.

p.1

and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home has been fully refurbished and decorated to a good standard, providing a warm and welcoming environment. Young people have decorated their bedrooms with their own preferred choices of colours and paints. Inspection report children’s home: SC459107 2 There is a strong focus on behaviour management in the home, in that staff promote young people’s understanding of what the behavioural expectations are, through, for example, young people’s meeting forums along with individual key-work sessions that are taking place regularly. This gives young people opportunities to discuss any issues of concern, including any bullying and negativity arising from behaviours that might be troubling them.

p.1

and young people since the most recent full inspection

One young person has been nominated as ‘young carer of the year’ for the work she has done with the elderly, which is a great achievement.

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

There have been unsettling periods, in terms of the mix of young people in placement, which have not been helped by the high turnover of staff. However, the home is currently stable with no plans to admit any more young people in the near future. There is a recognition that any future admissions need to be planned carefully through the home’s impact risk assessment process to avoid any further breakdowns in placement and unrest in the home. The transition of a young person who was admitted in September 2018 has been managed well. From her starting points she is making good progress and has settled well into her placement. She very recently received a bronze certificate at school for her ‘consistent exemplary effort and excellent achievement in a range of areas, outstanding commitment to school and own personal progress’.

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

Good progress has been made in ensuring that the staff are suitably skilled and experienced to fulfil their respective roles. Staff, including new starters, have completed a range of key training courses on core subjects, including managing sexually harmful behaviour, county lines and self-harm, all of which are highly relevant to the young people in placement. Staff have also been registered with the Local Safeguarding Children Board training site.

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

The staff team is slightly short on the number of qualified staff. One team member has recently completed a level 3 qualification, while three others are working towards this. Existing staff are supported well through the provision of regular supervision and team meetings. They engage well with the young people in placement and have good insight into their varying needs.

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

The monthly monitoring reports to the regulatory body are now being received at the appropriate intervals. The most recent report portrays a positive picture of the home and the progress being made by the young people.

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

No additional requirements are made as a result of this inspection, but the unmet requirement from the last inspection is still in place. Inspection report children’s home: SC459107 3

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
