p.1

This provision is good

n The quality of the childminder's teaching is good consistently. She provides an interesting learning environment, which helps to inspire children's curiosity to explore, play and learn. n All children make good progress from their starting points. They reach the milestones typical for their actual age and some children exceed these. This includes those children for whom the childminder receives government funding. n The childminder supports children's speech and language skills well. She uses questions that encourage children to talk about their ideas and introduces them to new words as they play. This helps children to extend their vocabulary and develop good social skills. n The childminder has established good partnerships with other settings that children attend, such as staff at the local nursery and school. She shares information with them to help improve children's care and learning experiences.

p.1

This provision is good

n The childminder is reflective about her practice. She includes the views of parents in identifying what she does well and to help her identify areas that may need further improvement. n The childminder gathers information from parents about their children's interests and care routines when they first start. However, she does not always obtain enough information about children's prior achievements to help plan for their learning from the outset. n The childminder ensures she keeps up to date with all her mandatory training. However, her professional development plans are not yet focused precisely on helping her to raise the quality of her teaching to an even higher level.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector had a tour of the premises. She observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and spoke with children during the inspection. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. n The inspector spoke to one parent and took account of the views of parents from feedback provided by the childminder for the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder has worked hard to improve the quality of the provision since her last inspection. She has addressed the actions and recommendations raised successfully and enhanced other areas of her practice. For example, the childminder has reorganised the spaces where children play, to allow them more opportunities to access toys independently. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her responsibility to keep children safe. She has a good knowledge of the signs and symptoms that indicate a child may be at risk of harm and knows how to report any concerns. The childminder keeps parents informed of their children's progress. She shares information about their achievements through daily conversations.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder assesses children's progress and plans exciting activities to help close any gaps in learning. She fosters children's imaginative play well. For example, children hunt for bugs buried in sand and bake pretend cakes. The childminder extends their learning as she encourages them to name the different insects, count their legs and describe their shapes. She makes good use of spontaneous events to encourage children to talk about what they already know. For example, children get excited as they hear the noise of a helicopter flying overhead. The childminder prompts children to think about where it could be going. Children eagerly share their knowledge of flying, telling the childminder 'aeroplanes land in airports'. The childminder is skilful at knowing when to engage in children's play, to extend their learning, and when to stay back and observe.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder's calm and caring nature helps children to develop strong attachments with her. The children often ask the childminder to join in their play and go to her for cuddles. The childminder supports children to manage their own self-care needs. For example, children put their own coats on and are confident to 'have a go' at doing up the zip themselves. The childminder provides children with lots of praise and encouragement which helps to promote their positive behaviour. She listens with interest to what children have to say and respects their views and ideas. This help to build children's confidence and boosts their self-esteem. Children behave well and play together cooperatively. The childminder helps children to learn how to keep themselves safe and healthy. For example, children learn to climb up and down stairs safely and develop an understanding of the importance of eating healthily.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children quickly gain the skills and attitudes that help to prepare them for their next stage in learning and their move on to nursery and school. The childminder provides good opportunities for children to lead their own play and access a wide range of resources independently. Children demonstrate good language skills and are confident and capable communicators. They concentrate and maintain their interest over long periods. Children develop good literacy skills and use mathematical language in their play. Older children demonstrate good pencil control as they learn to write their name and gain understanding of the link between letters and sounds.
