Inspection activities n The inspector observed the childminder as she interacted with children during their play activities indoors. n The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. n The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation, including her policies and procedures and children's records. n The inspector read written statements from parents and took their views into account. n The inspector discussed with the childminder her aims for activities, and how she plans for what children need to learn next and reviews the progress children make.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to protect children and has clear procedures in place if she has any concerns. She carries out daily checks and thorough risk assessments of her premises to help to promote children's safety. The childminder supervises children well. She reflects on her practice and encourages parents and children to share their views about her provision through verbal feedback and questionnaires. Parents comment very positively about the care that the childminder provides and the progress that their children make.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder recognises the interests of children in her care and plans stimulating and challenging experiences. She tailors her interactions in children's play and helps them to practise their developing skills. For example, children stay focused and show good concentration skills as they complete a puzzle. The childminder sings familiar songs. Babies smile and gurgle at her and demonstrate their interest and engagement. Older children are provided with a broad range of interesting opportunities. Resources are clearly labelled and easily accessible. This enables children to make choices in their play and extend their curiosity. The childminder encourages younger children to develop their mathematical skills in daily activities. For instance, she counts with children and helps them learn about shapes and sizes.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder manages children's behaviour well. She gives them clear, consistent rules and boundaries which are appropriate to children's age and stage of development. Regular use of praise and encouragement helps to support children's confidence and self-esteem. They respond well to the praise they receive for their achievements and gain good levels of emotional well-being. The childminder supports children's good health well. For example, she frequently reminds children to drink water and provides daily exercise. She teaches children good personal hygiene routines effectively. Children learn to do things for themselves. The childminder provides children with a wide range of outings in the community. They go to local parks, playgroups and the library. These experiences help children to learn about their local community, develop social skills and understand the world around them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are independent, happy and confident under the childminder's care. They have formed good relationships with their peers and the childminder. They have positive attitudes and a love of learning. Children are prepared well for their future learning and development and their eventual move to school.
