Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n There are weaknesses in the monitoring of the effectiveness of the setting. The childminder does not always meet the adult-to-child ratio requirements for early years children. n The childminder does not always identify children's level of achievement across all areas of their learning. Consequently, she is not well informed about what children need to learn next, which hinders children's progress. n The childminder does not always involve parents as much as possible in the assessment of their child's learning when they first start at the setting.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder takes the children on a range of exciting outings. For example, children test their physical skills on the climbing equipment in the large adventure playground. Furthermore, they visit theme parks, where they follow a trail and observe many life-sized fairy-tale characters in their houses. n The childminder regularly takes the children to the toddler group. This helps children to develop their social skills outside of the childminder's home. This also provides children with plenty of opportunities to enjoy messy play. n The childminder builds effective relationships with the children. For example, she offers children cuddles and she chats to them throughout the day. Children behave well and share experiences together throughout the day.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

ensure the adult-to-child ratio requirements for young children are fully understood and adhered to at all times, so that children receive the individual attention they need. 19/04/2019

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n increase the information gathered from parents about children's skills and abilities, and use this information to enhance the planning of activities and experiences from the outset n regularly reflect on the setting's strengths and weaknesses, and develop a clear strategy for improving outcomes for all children.

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living or working in the household. n The inspector held conversations with children during the inspection. n The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has not effectively evaluated how well she is meeting the early years foundation stage requirements. As a result, there are weaknesses in the childminder's assessment of children's progress and in her understanding about the numbers of children she can effectively care for. However, the arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has attended child protection training. She is fully aware of the possible signs of abuse and the procedure she must follow if she has any concerns about a child. The childminder has effective partnerships with the local authority advisers, including those who support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. This helps to promote consistency and continuity in children's care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder's planning for children's learning is not consistently good. This is because the childminder does not always seek enough information from parents about what their child knows and can do when they first start at the setting. Furthermore, the childminder does not always assess every child's ongoing progress across all aspects of the areas of learning. However, the childminder uses a range of effective teaching strategies in her interactions with the children. For example, she encourages the children to use the musical instruments during a singing session. During such activities, the childminder describes what the children are doing as they copy the actions in the song and use the musical instruments. This helps children to develop their understanding of language. The childminder praises each child for their attempts at making musical sounds, thereby developing their self-confidence. She regularly takes the children to the

library and reads a range of books with them. This helps to develop children's love of books.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

At times, the childminder does not meet the ratio requirements. This sometimes results in children not being fully engaged in purposeful play. The childminder takes the younger children with her to drop off and collect the older children from school. This helps the younger children to familiarise themselves with the school environment. The childminder provides children with nutritious and balanced snacks.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children learn some of the skills that help to prepare them for their move on to nursery or school. They enjoy make-believe play based on their first-hand experiences. For example, children like to dress up and play with the doll's house. Children concentrate as they make marks on the paper with the poster pens. However, not all children make the progress they are capable of. This is because the childminder does not assess every child's progress to reduce any possible gaps in their learning.
