This provision is good

n The childminder provides children with good opportunities to develop their language as she engages them in appropriate conversations. She encourages young children to repeat words, introduces a commentary on what children are doing and asks them appropriate open questions. n The childminder is a very good role model to children. She teaches them to understand boundaries and expectations. Younger children listen well, follow instructions and are kind. They are tolerant and learning to share. n Children benefit from good opportunities to explore the local area and community. They are supported well in learning about people whose lives may be different to their own. For example, during Chinese New Year, children create pigs with clothes pegs to represent the Year of the Pig. n Since the last inspection, the childminder has addressed the actions and recommendations raised to improve the quality of care and learning for children.

p.1

This provision is good

n Young children do not have many chances to explore different textures and materials to enhance their senses. n The childminder's systems for self-evaluation do not include the views of the parents to help support her to identify areas for improvement.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector spoke to the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with the children. n The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including policies, procedures and children's records. n The inspector conducted a tour of the premises used for childminding purposes.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of the possible indicators of abuse. She fully understands how to respond if she has any concerns about children's welfare. The childminder is committed to providing a safe environment for children. She carries out daily visual risk assessments to ensure the premises, resources and equipment are suitable and safe. The childminder is committed to continually improving her knowledge and skills. She attends regular training events to enhance her practice and improve outcomes for children. For instance, she has recently completed a course on assessments to enable her to build on children's learning journeys.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows young children well and monitors their progress effectively. This supports her to provide activities that will interest children and encourage their next steps in learning. The childminder has very good relationships with parents. She shares information about children's progress with them to encourage and foster the learning at home. Parents keep her well informed about children's achievements at home. This helps to promote consistency in children's learning. The childminder provides children with ample opportunities to play imaginatively. For example, older children enjoy playing with plastic mini-beasts and dinosaurs in a tray of soil.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works well with parents from the start to be consistent in meeting children's individual care routines. She helps children feel safe and secure through her close support. For instance, she provides eye contact while feeding babies and ensures younger children have access to their special comforters at rest times. The childminder supports children to develop healthy lifestyles. She provides them with daily opportunities to engage in physical activities. For example, on rainy days, she provides children with soft balls to play catch. This helps to develop children's hand-to-eye coordination. She further promotes their health by teaching children good handwashing hygiene routines before lunch.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and acquire skills for their eventual move on to nursery or school. For example, babies enjoy accessing cause-and-effect toys. They watch with awe as the jukebox lights up and plays familiar melodies. Older children confidently explore the childminder's home and select resources to promote their interests and their independence. For instance, they demonstrate good imaginative skills as they place dolls in buggies and pretend to take them on journeys around the room. Children learn how to sort and to coordinate colours as they access the hammer-and-ball activity. They hammer with enthusiasm to send the coloured balls into their corresponding holes.
