p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection issues. She knows the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child. The childminder regularly shares information with parents through discussions to help keep them informed about the care and learning of their children. She finds out what they enjoy at home. For example, the childminder knows that children are interested in fire engines. She provides resources to support their interests as they play. The childminder evaluates her practice and she is always considering ways to improve. For example, she wants to develop the outdoor area to enhance the learning of the children. She keeps in close contact with outside agencies to support the different aspects of her practice.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder teaches children good communication and language skills. She reads them their favourite books with lots of expression. She points to the pictures, repeats words and extends vocabulary. For example, when she is reading a story about 'people that help us', she points out that a repair person could be called 'a carpenter'. The childminder offers a range of equipment which helps support children's creativity and imagination. She incorporates mathematics and language into their everyday play. For example, children count the cones in the outdoor area as they run around them, before they rocket into space. The childminder always provides mark-making tools, such as paper and pencils, so children can draw pictures. Children enjoy music and the childminder makes audio recordings of children's favourite songs for them to play at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder ensures that the children have a safe space to play and explore, which helps them develop good levels of self-confidence. The childminder gives children clear explanations about why they do things. For example, she encourages children to tidy activities away and to look after the toys. This helps to develop their awareness of safety and taking responsibility. The childminder reminds the children of the benefits of going outside to get plenty of physical exercise and fresh air. The children and childminder walk home from school and talk about safety on the road. She supports healthy eating by preparing nutritious meals for the children. They talk about their favourite fruits and vegetables. She has regular fire drills with the children and they practise evacuating the premises in a calm way.
