The childminder closely supervises children as they play and uses risk assessments of her home and during outings to minimise risks to children and to help keep them safe. The childminder is confident about her role to protect children. She knows the possible signs that could indicate a child is at risk of harm and who to report these concerns to. Partnerships with parents are strong. Parents are highly complimentary about the care the childminder provides. They comment that their children thrive in her care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder makes frequent observations and assessments of children's learning and uses these to outline appropriate next steps in their learning. The childminder helps children to develop their communication and language skills well. She speaks slowly and uses words in simple sentences to help young children understand what she means. She gives children time to think and respond to questions that she asks. The childminder provides good opportunities for children to develop their physical skills. For example, older children use their fine-motor skills to peel stickers from a sheet to create a picture and they develop their larger arm muscles as they manipulate dough.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a welcoming and stimulating environment indoors and outdoors. There is a wealth of interesting resources that children access independently. The childminder is caring and patient in her approach. She has developed close bonds with children and they show that they feel safe and secure. Children behave well. The childminder supports children to share and take turns. Younger children laugh and smile with delight as they play peekaboo with the childminder in a mirror. Children actively seek her out to join in with their play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn key skills in readiness for the next stage in their learning and their eventual move on to school. Older children demonstrate good hand-to-eye coordination as they fill and empty containers with rice during a sensory activity. They hold pens and make careful marks in preparation for early writing. Children are keen to do things for themselves. For example, children chop their fruit at snack time using a small knife.
