This provision is good

n The childminder has a friendly and nurturing approach towards children. She builds strong and secure relationships with them which helps them to approach her when they require support and comfort. n The childminder encourages good behaviour by praising children when they behave well. Occasionally when children do not share or spoil other children's activities, she manages their behaviour skilfully by explaining to children why it is not acceptable to do so. n The childminder has a good understanding of the level children should typically be developing at. This helps her to swiftly identify and support children who are not making sufficient progress in their learning. n Parents are complimentary about the care and education provided by the childminder. They comment positively about the skills children learn and the support the childminder provides for them and the children. n All children make good progress in their learning, including those with special

educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). n Children learn about a wide variety of festivals, including Christmas, Chinese New Year and St David's Day. They learn to accept and value different cultures. n Occasionally, the childminder's interactions with children do not fully challenge them so that they make the best possible progress in their learning. n The childminder has identified the benefit of training to improve the quality of her teaching. However, she has not made the most of training opportunities to further develop teaching skills.

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector spoke with the children and the childminder at convenient times during the inspection. n The inspector sampled various documents, including children's learning records, accident records and relevant policies and procedures. n The inspector and the childminder observed children during activities and discussed children's learning and progress. n The inspector took account of parents' views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a thorough understanding of her responsibility to keep required records and to safeguard children. She clearly knows what to do if she is concerned about a child's welfare. The childminder has improved her self- evaluation to identify weaknesses in her practice. She receives support from the local authority which she uses to help her make improvements. For example, she has changed the way in which she uses the observations and assessments of what children can do. She now uses these to identify appropriate next steps to progress children's learning. The childminder works well with parents and other professionals to access the necessary support for children with SEND.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides children with a wide range of activities which are enjoyable and pique their interest. She uses her good knowledge of the children to provide them with resources that will help them make progress in their learning. For example, children whose next steps relate to improving concentration are provided with different activities involving bubbles, as they have previously shown interest in this area. The childminder uses this activity to also teach children about sizes and measurements by talking about the sizes of the bubbles and the liquid that is poured into the machine. She uses everyday routines to promote children's learning, for example by identifying the colour of cars while they are walking outside.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children learn to follow instructions well. They tidy up before snack and lunchtime as this is embedded in their routine. They display good manners and the childminder regularly reminds them to say 'please' and 'thank you'. They learn about health and safety and start taking responsibility for their own self-care from a young age. For example, they decide when they need to use the toilet and access the toilet independently. Children benefit from daily fresh air which includes regular trips to the park. They enjoy going to the woods for walks to build dens.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn skills which will support them for their next stage of learning as well as prepare them for school. For example, they play cooperatively alongside other children and learn to put on their own shoes and coats. Children are keen to initiate their own play and show good levels of concentration. The welcoming and accessible environment supports children to make choices in their play. They choose the activities that interest them and include their friends and the childminder in their play.
