Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder does not ensure that her risk assessment for outings is fully effective. The vehicle in which children are being transported does not have adequate insurance. n The childminder does not identify children's starting points to help her accurately monitor and assess all children's development and identify any gaps in their learning. She does not use her observations effectively to establish children's next steps in learning or to ensure they make consistently good progress. n The childminder does not use opportunities as they arise consistently to encourage children to do more for themselves. n The childminder has few resources available to help children extend their knowledge of people around them. n The childminder does not use self-evaluation effectively to identify areas for improvement and to develop her practice.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Partnerships with parents are effective. For example, parents are informed about the activities in which their children take part. This helps parents to support their children's learning at home. n Children are motivated, confident and happy. They are eager to explore the interesting range of resources on offer and join in with activities. For instance, they excitedly take part in drawing and mark making. n The childminder has a close relationship with children. They listen well and understand the daily routine. Children behave well.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n use opportunities as they arise to encourage children to be even more independent n build on multicultural resources to help children extend their knowledge of people around them n use self-evaluation more effectively to identify weaknesses in practice, to target areas for improvement and raise outcomes for children.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector spoke to the childminder about her self-evaluation and discussed how she makes improvements. n The inspector observed activities available, children's interaction and discussed benefits to children's learning. n The inspector observed the interaction between the childminder and children and spoke to them at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector considered the written views of parents. n The inspector sampled a range of documents, including safeguarding policies and procedures, vehicle insurance, suitability checks for all adults living in the household and children's records.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not use evaluation successfully to identify all weaknesses in her practice and the provision. The childminder completes risk assessments, including for outings. However, she has not appropriately insured the vehicle used to transport children to help reduce any potential hazard to children's safety. The childminder has a clear knowledge of safeguarding. She knows the procedures to follow to help support children's welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder completes observations of children's learning. However, she does not gain information on children's starting points, or use her observations to assess children's development to help them achieve the best possible outcomes. The childminder has forged strong links with parents to provide children with continuity in their care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does not track children's development effectively to help monitor their learning and identify any possible gaps. She does not plan next steps in learning to help children make better progress. However, the childminder helps children to count and to name shapes. She uses mathematical language, for example 'big' and 'small', to help children understand size. The childminder helps children to develop their language and communication skills. For instance, she clearly repeats words that children say and extends their sentences. Children have opportunities to develop their early reading and writing skills. For instance, the childminder reads stories to children and provides them with tools to make marks. The childminder provides children with enjoyable experiences, such as opportunities to develop their make-believe play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Due to the weakness in leadership and management, children's welfare is not fully promoted. The childminder does not consistently encourage children to be as independent as possible. For example, she does not give children the opportunity to peel their own satsuma for snack or encourage them to pour their own water. The childminder provides few opportunities to help children understand people's similarities and differences, and resources do not depict diversity effectively. The childminder provides children with opportunities to be active, healthy and develop their physical skills. She encourages children's efforts and praises their achievements, which helps to build their self-esteem. The childminder encourages children to share, take turns and to be respectful, which helps to support their social skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Although the childminder does not gather information about children's starting points or use assessments effectively to identify accurate next steps in learning, children make suitable progress. They learn some skills that help to prepare them for the next stage in their learning and eventually for school. Younger children are eager to help and are kind to the childminder and each other. All children are curious and want to learn. They are polite and confident to express their views. Older children explain what they have drawn and children develop their early writing skills well.
