This provision is good

n The childminder and her assistant provide a welcoming, homely environment. Children form strong bonds with the childminder and her assistant from the time they start in their care. n The childminder supports and nurtures children's independence from an early age. For example, toddlers show persistence as they try to put on their shoes and do up the zips on their coats. n Partnerships with others sharing care of the children are well established. The childminder is proactive in sharing information with other professionals to support continuity of care and support children in their learning and development. n The childminder accurately assesses children's development and the progress they make. She carefully observes them at play along with her assistant and then plans activities to help them to build on their knowledge and skills. Children are supported to make good progress. n The childminder does not make the best possible use of professional development

opportunities to help to raise her and her assistant's good standard of teaching even higher. n The childminder does not fully encourage children and parents to contribute to self- evaluation to identify ongoing improvements to develop the provision even further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n focus more precisely on developing a programme of professional development that helps to develop the quality of teaching even further n extend self-evaluation to include the views of parents and children to help target areas for improvement even more precisely.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed its impact on children's learning and development. n The inspector carried out a joint observation of an activity with the childminder. n The inspector spoke to the childminder, her assistant, the children and parents at appropriate times during the inspection, and took account of parents' views through written feedback provided. n The inspector looked at a sample of relevant documents, including evidence of suitability checks carried out on people in the household, policies and procedures and children's learning records.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder fully understands the procedures for recognising and dealing with concerns, to promote and safeguard children's welfare. She ensures that her assistant is clear about his responsibilities to safeguard children. Overall, partnerships with parents are effective. For example, the childminder gives detailed daily feedback so that parents understand what their children are learning during their time with her. Parents state that they are very happy with the care provided. The childminder uses risk assessments to help minimise hazards to children. She guides and supports her assistant in his practice, and they work extremely well together.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her assistant know the children in their care well. They gather information from parents to understand children's starting points and interests. Children enjoy listening to stories, identifying different pictures and helping to turn the pages. This helps them to develop their speech and literacy skills. The childminder supports children's mathematical development well. For example, as children build towers using wooden discs, the childminder supports younger children to count and begin to understand mathematical concepts.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children's behaviour is very good, and they play together well. The childminder and her assistant ensure children are aware of the behaviour expectations. They recognise children's achievements, giving regular praise to build their self-esteem. Older children show good social skills as they play board games cooperatively together, and children learn about rules and taking turns. The childminder supports children to learn about leading a healthy lifestyle. For instance, she ensures older children only play on consoles for short periods of time and encourages them to take part in physical exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are working comfortably within the expected ranges of development for their ages. Children eagerly join in with activities and show good levels of concentration and enjoyment. Children develop good hand and eye coordination as they make marks using chalks and when tipping and pouring sand from containers. Children are well prepared for their next stages of learning and eventual move to school.
