p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder has not provided Ofsted with information about family members so that suitability checks can be completed within the prescribed timescale. n The childminder does not fully maximise opportunities for children to learn about people and communities beyond their own experiences. n On occasion, the childminder is too eager to help and does not make the most of opportunities for children to try to do things for themselves and develop their own ideas. n The childminder has not implemented rigorous self-evaluation to identify and prioritise areas of the setting that need improvement.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children are well behaved, happy and have lots of fun with the childminder. They form close bonds of attachment to her and display their affection and friendship with the childminder. n The quality of teaching is good. The childminder provides a consistent level of teaching and provides a variety of activities to cover all areas of learning. Children have a positive disposition towards learning and make good progress from their starting points. n Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder keeps the parents involved and well informed about their child's progress. Parents report how pleased they are with the childminder and the service she offers.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n make the most of opportunities for children to do things for themselves during activities and develop their own ideas n increase opportunities for children to help them to learn about people and communities beyond their own experiences n strengthen the self-evaluation processes to ensure that areas for development are accurately identified and addressed.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector viewed the areas used for childminding. She talked to the children and childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection and observed a variety of activities. n The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability of the childminder and those living on the premises. n The inspector discussed children's learning and development and sampled their records. n The inspector took account of the views of parents by reading a number of their comments on letters obtained by the childminder. n The inspector reviewed a selection of policies and procedures, including safeguarding.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

Weaknesses in the organisation of the childminder's practice means Ofsted have not been given necessary information as required. The childminder has not provided information to Ofsted about family members within the prescribed timescales, so that suitability checks can be completed. However, there is no adverse impact on children as household members are not left alone with children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to recognise and protect children who may be at risk of harm. She is clear about what to do if she has concerns about a child. The childminder closely monitors children's progress so that any gaps in their learning are quickly identified and addressed. She undertakes relevant training and some professional development, which helps her to keep her knowledge up to date.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her assessments well to identify children's next steps and plans a good range of experiences to help them to learn. Children demonstrate they have lots of fun when learning with the childminder. For example, they giggle together as she draws around them to make life-sized posters. Children use a range of resources to decorate their posters, such as materials which they cut themselves with scissors. This helps to develop their fine motor skills. The childminder further helps their learning as she introduces books and posters about the human body. This helps children's early reading skills. Children's speech and language skills are supported well. For example, children excitedly recall a trip to a zoo and how they fed the parrots. The childminder carefully listens to what they say and sensitively extends the conversation with them. Children's early mathematical development is well supported. For instance, they play dominoes

together, counting how many they have and matching the pictures on them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Weaknesses in the leadership and management of the setting means children's welfare is not fully supported. However, the childminder is a good role model and children behave well and are kind and respectful. The childminder consistently praises children, helping them to understand what they have done well. For example, children are proud as they help to tidy up the toys. The childminder works closely with parents to help children settle and meet their individual care needs. Children benefit from fresh air and exercise daily as they play in the garden or go on walks around the local area.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are making good progress in their learning and development in relation to their starting points. Children are confident, sociable and show a positive attitude to learning. The childminder has high expectations for the children. She inspires them to be confident learners and prepares them with the skills they need in readiness for school.
