Information about this children’s home

and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged good at the last full inspection. At the interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has sustained effectiveness. Young people develop positive relationships with the staff and feel able to talk to them about things that go well and things that they are finding difficult. One young person said, ‘They (staff) are the only ones that have really listened to me, this is the best home that I’ve lived in. They really helped me with my mental health. When they start the ball rolling they don’t stop until I get help.’ A social worker said, ‘I have nothing but praise for the managers and staff. They see beyond the behaviour of the young people and work with me to find solutions.’ Young people benefit from planned transitions when they first move into the home or when they move to a new placement. Careful planning takes place to prepare young people for moves or transitions of any kind. Since the last inspection, the group of young

Leaders and managers consider new referrals to the home very carefully. This helps protect the stability of the home and prevents placements from breaking down. Young people access education that is best suited to their individual needs. The reasons why one young person receives home tutoring are clearly outlined in his education plan. However, the amount of education that he receives has not increased as quickly as anticipated. Furthermore, despite an education plan being in place, this plan does not set out in detail how the young person is able to receive alternative education provision in the afternoons. A recommendation is raised to ensure that additional education is facilitated without further delay, to enable the young person to make progress in his

learning. There have been incidents of young people leaving the home without permission. Staff respond effectively, applying agreed procedures and safety plans to safeguard the young person and ensure their safe return. The experienced registered manager and deputy manager closely monitor practice in the home to ensure that young people receive appropriate responses from staff and benefit from high-quality care. The recommendations made at the previous inspection have been met.

Recommendations

 Where children placed in a home are not participating in education because they have been excluded or are not on a school roll for some other reason, the registered person and staff must work closely with the placing authority so that the child is supported and enabled to resume full-time education as soon as possible. In the interim, the child should be supported to sustain or regain their confidence in education and be engaged in suitable structured activities. Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
