Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder does not consistently keep detailed written records regarding the administration of medicine to children. n The childminder does not does not always use the information gained from assessments of what children can do to help them to make good progress in their learning. n Sometimes, the childminder does not use the correct vocabulary when talking to children. This does not fully support their language development. n Opportunities for children to access the resources independently are not maximised. This does not fully promote their ability to make choices about their play.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children share good, supportive relationships with the childminder. This helps to foster their emotional development. Children are happy and settled. n The childminder provides some activities that children enjoy. She uses praise and encouragement to support children's engagement and promotes their self-confidence. n Children are learning about ways to keep themselves safe. For example, the childminder talks to them about road safety as they walk in the local community. n The childminder actively seeks the views of parents to help to support the evaluation of her provision. Their comments are positive and suggest that they feel well informed.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this had on children's learning. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder and talked to children throughout the inspection. n The inspector looked at a selection of documentation, including children's learning records, safeguarding procedures, parents' written comments and training records. n The inspector considered evidence of the suitability checks carried out for all adults living in the home.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder gains prior written consent from parents to administer medication to children. However, her procedures for recording what medicine children have received are not robust and do not meet the statutory requirement. The impact on children is not significant, as the breech of the requirement relates to the accuracy of documentation and not in the administering of the medicine. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has recently attended safeguarding training. She has a secure understanding of signs and symptoms of potential abuse. The childminder knows the correct procedures to follow in the event of a concern. This helps to support children's welfare. The childminder uses effective risk assessment to help to maintain a safe environment for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder has recently begun to make assessments of children's learning. However, she does not use them consistently enough to monitor their individual progress. This means that the childminder does not always highlight potential gaps in children's learning and plan activities to close them quickly. The childminder eagerly talks to children about what is happening and sings familiar rhymes. This helps to support young children's language development. The childminder provides activities that enable babies to explore cause and effect. For example, they delight as they create sounds by pressing buttons on electronic toys. The childminder models some actions for young children to copy. She shares simple story books with young children and talks about what they can see. This helps to support their understanding and their literacy skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not document the administration of medication to children appropriately. This is a breach of the safeguarding and welfare requirements. The childminder provides a warm and homely environment for children. Gradual admission procedures are tailored to meet children's individual needs. The childminder is a positive role model. Children respond well to her kind and consistent approach. The childminder promotes young children's self-care skills well. For example, they help to wipe the tray of their high chair prior to eating their snack. The childminder fosters positive behaviour and children enjoy their time with her. Young children's physical development is appropriately supported through a range of activities.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not always make good progress in their development due to inconsistencies in assessment. This means that the childminder is not always fully aware of potential gaps in children's learning and does consistently plan next steps to support their development. However, they are gaining some skills that will support them in the next stage of their learning. Babies demonstrate a sense of belonging. They are content and engaged in activities that are of interest to them. For example, they enjoy exploring a basket full of household objects. The childminder provides some activities that support complementary learning opportunities for children who attend other settings.
