Effectiveness of leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a thorough understanding of the possible signs that a child is at risk of harm and knows what to do if she has concerns. She works in close partnership with parents to meet the needs of each child. She involves them in establishing what each child can already do when they start attending and keeps them well informed about their children's progress. The childminder also works in partnership with other providers to ensure a shared approach to children's learning. The childminder effectively evaluates the quality of her provision. She has completed a survey of parents' views to help her in this process. She identifies areas for development and undertakes training to develop her skills. For example, she has completed training in identifying each child's preferred style of learning and adapted her teaching and resources as a result.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder knows children well. She makes a full assessment of their starting points in partnership with parents and makes ongoing observations of children's progress. This enables her to identify and plan for what each one needs to do next. The childminder supports children's communication skills well. She keeps up a running commentary on what they are doing and encourages them to learn new words. She also teaches them to communicate using sign language for key words, such as 'please' and 'thank you'. The childminder introduces the concepts of counting and shapes. She counts out loud as she helps children lay down train track pieces and explains that the tracks make a circle. The childminder uses demonstration and explanation to help children to learn new skills. For example, she shows a child how to produce a sound from a recorder.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder patiently supports children that are less confident and uses praise and encouragement to build their social skills and self-esteem. Children enjoy cuddling up to the childminder and evidently feel comfortable and secure with her. The childminder ensures that children adopt healthy lifestyles. They have regular exercise in the garden and the local park and enthusiastically eat healthy snacks and meals, which include a variety of fruit and vegetables. Children develop an awareness of their local community as they go out to activities, such as toddler group.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Young children are well prepared for the next steps in their education, including school. They widen their vocabulary as they learn new words and develop independence, such as tidying away the toys when they have finished using them. They are motivated to learn and persevere with learning something new, such as playing the recorder.
