n The childminder is a wonderful role model. She is particularly skilled in supporting young children to understand rules and boundaries. She has very clear routines in place and high expectations which children respond to extremely well. Children's behaviour is excellent. n The childminder knows the children she cares for very well. She forms positive partnerships with parents and skilfully engages them in exchanging information about children's ongoing needs. The childminder ensures that these needs are constantly met. n The childminder works closely with other settings that children attend and other professionals. She exchanges information regularly to help support children's care and learning consistently. n The childminder observes children regularly to identify their individual needs and interests. She uses this information to help her plan suitable activities, monitor the progress that children make and promote their learning and development.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder updates her policies and procedures to reflect changes in legislation. She demonstrates a good knowledge of the potential signs of abuse and is confident about reporting procedures. Risk assessments are completed on a regular basis, with appropriate steps taken to minimise risks and help to keep children safe. The childminder regularly evaluates her practice and considers the views of parents and children. Parents comment that they are very happy with the 'fantastic' care children receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's communication and language skills particularly well. For example, she uses repetitive songs, introduces children to new vocabulary and provides a running commentary as they play. Children enjoy exploring the interesting array of musical instruments from around the world. The childminder describes the features of the instruments and introduces words to describe the sounds that they make. The childminder warmly encourages children to express themselves creatively as they sing and dance. They are confident and motivated to play and explore. The childminder supports mathematical learning. She helps children to count, make comparisons about size and use positional language.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Strong settling-in procedures are very effective in supporting children's emotional development. Children demonstrate high levels of self-confidence and a very good understanding of how to communicate their needs. For example, children confidently tell the childminder that they want to go outside to play. Children's physical well-being is supported well. An abundance of trips out into the local community helps children to feel a sense of belonging and provides plentiful opportunities for energetic play. The childminder encourages children to make healthy food choices. This helps them to gain an understanding of what foods are healthy from an early age.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning and development from their starting points. They gain the skills they need to help them with the next stage in their learning and their eventual move on to school. For example, they enjoy lots of visits to local playgroups. This introduces children to a wider circle of friends and helps to extend their social skills. Older children develop a keen interest in books and are able to recall their favourite stories. The childminder supports children well to recognise some of the letters of their name, which contributes towards the development of their early literacy skills.
